Working at Crossness Pumping Station was a tough gig.

The Victorian sewers were not run on hope alone. It took a lot of hard work from a lot of people to keep London clean and keep the sewers running. That was especially true at its towering pumping stations such as Crossness.
Stokers were just one part of the working community that kept the engines running at Crossness Pumping Station. From teachers to engineers to screen cleaners, Victorian Crossness was alive with activity.

Could you survive working in London's Victorian sewers?

It took thousands of workers to build, maintain and run London's colossal network of sewers and pumping stations. Very few jobs were pleasant!

If you want to find out what these workers did to relax, come enjoy a 1902 day out at Crossness Pumping Station. With games, a Punch and Judy show and lunch out in the garden you can get a taste for Crossness summer day out!

Restoring Victorian steam engines isn't easy!

In order to restore the magnificent Victorian Beam engines at Crossness Pumping Station, volunteer in 1998 had to do some serious problem solving. In this clip they have to seperate the piston rod from the Prince Consort - an engine now fully restored and steamed most months for visitors.

Volunteers at Crossness Pumping Station continue to restore the grand beam engines at Crossness, as well as steaming them for open days. Head to our website if you are interested in getting involved.

Enjoy an Edwardian day by the river on Sunday 6th September at Crossness Pumping Station.

In 1907, workers at Crossness and their families enjoyed a jolly carnival and sports day. Over a century later Crossness is hosting the sequel as part of the Totally Thames Festival. Come along for music, family activities, nature tours and one of Victorian London's architectural marvels.

Volunteer-run restoration at Crossness Pumping Station.

The awe-inspiring sight that welcomes visitors to Crossness Pumping Station is thanks to decades of volunteer work that has restored the grade I listed industrial heritage site to its Victorian glory.

How are London's delicacies connected to its Victorian sewers?

Crossness Pumping Station and the sewers connected to it changed more than just London's public health.
The ability to control the waste going into the Thames restored the dead river to a place where wildlife (and oysters) could thrive once again!
