These dapper gents are Hatton Garden jeweller Max Meyer (left) and his Paris agent Henri Saloman. In 1913 Saloman sent a necklace known as 'Mona Lisa of Pearls' back to Meyer after a sale fell through, but it was intercepted by a four-man gang of London criminals who bribed the postman.

Three of the gang were descended from Jewish families in the Austrian Empire, as was diamond dealer Samuel Brandstatter, who posed as a buyer's intermediary to the gang, leading to their arrest and conviction.
