Did you know that Beal Modern School in Ilford was the first school in the country to evacuate their pupils to the safety of the countryside during the Second World War. Here are the boys arriving at Kennylands Camp, Oxfordshire in 1940.

Crowds lined the streets to welcome the Duke and Duchess of York who visited Ilford to mark the occasion.

W is for Women in STEM! 👩🏻‍🔬

Elsie Dean of Wanstead made communication parts for radios, planes & submarines at the Plessey factory on Vicarage Lane, Ilford.

In 2001 she donated her circuit board prototypes to Redbridge Museum and spoke to us about her life & work.

Since opening in 2000, Redbridge Museum has worked with hundreds of local people to produce over 70 exhibitions and displays, attracted over 200,000 visits, held over 600 family activities and taught over 35,000 school pupils.

Redbridge Museum creates a sense of place and belonging for local residents from diverse backgrounds. It is a unique learning resource for children, families and general visitors and increases the quality of life for local residents and visitors to the area. It is a key part of Redbridge Council’s cultural provision.
