The Muse at 269 - Gallery / Studio

The Muse at 269 - Gallery / Studio Gallery / Studio / Graduate residency program We also have a limited number of opportunities for gallery hire within our calendar.

The Muse gallery was established in 2003, in order to support emerging artists by combining creative and commercial elements under one roof. We inherited the building from the creators of 'Green & Blacks' to convert the town house into a mayhem of cultural, creative and commercial activities. We offer exhibition space for contemporary artists, whether established or emerging, accepted purely by me

rit of work. Throughout the year community arts projects, musicians, film makers and live performers are invited to submit proposals for workshops and events at No. 269, Portobello Road and collaborate with our modest team of artists to present to London.

🎬 The Mask – A Photo Novel

Join us as part of the Portobello Film Festival on 18 September at 6:30pm.

“We´ve really been working under the radar with this one” , says producer Annika C
Hellström. No funding or sponsorships, no external control; just free creativity, a lot of ideas and initiative. But the production has also been marked by tragedy. Two of the leading actors, Claes Fredriksson and Thomas Tibert, passed away during the creative process.
“It has been absolutely heartbreaking” , says the producer. “But their legacy lives on in the film, you meet them both on the screen.”
Artistic inspiration - a path from the past
“The Mask - a photo novel is inspired by expressionist silent films, Fritz Lang’s German productions, James Whale’s classic Frankenstein films, Blade Runner, Ingmar Bergman, and of course the French short film, La Jetée by Chris Marker” , says director Ulf Remus.
The soundtrack is electronic and created by a Polish-Swedish team called Audio Spirits.

The Mask - a photo novel

Save the Date!
18th of September 6:30pm
Screened at the Muse Gallery

Swedish film enthusiast Ulf Remus had an idea, gathered a team of competent and artistic collaborators, and created short film The Mask - a photo novel, screening on Portobello Film Festival 2026.
The Mask - a photo novel is a 26-minute short film; a dark and apocalyptic still-image story with a narrative voice, about a man locked up in an institution. He has lost his memory and does not know who he is or why he’s there. Inside the institution there is also a doctor who uses increasingly drastic methods to try to restore his memory.
Things take a dramatic and unexpected turn when the doctor finally succeeds, and the man finds his way back into his past.

Great News!!!!🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾

The Muse Gallery is proud to announce the participation in Frieze Sculpture 2026 of Catriona Robertson Catriona Robertson one of the Muse Gallery Residency Programme Alumni (2022).

Robertson will present WYRM, a monumental site-specific installation exploring urban decay, synthetic waste, and the regenerative potential of nature in a post-human future.

Installed within Regent’s Park, WYRM envisions a speculative ecology in which nature gradually reclaims the built environment through the cracks of its concrete foundations. Robertson’s installation features gargantuan worm-like forms that emerge from and burrow beneath the earth, quietly reshaping the urban landscape from within.

These imagined organisms represent an evolved species capable of digesting the synthetic debris of contemporary civilisation.

Additionally she has been commissioned by Purling Purling London - The Art of the Game (Art Games) to create the accompanying chess set, which will be available to view by appointment, along with others of her pieces in the same project (more information soon).

Thank you Frieze and Frieze Sculpture Curator Fatos Ustek 🍀🍀🍀

The Muse Residency 2027 Competition Shortlisted Artists Group Show
16-26 July,
Opening Night 16th July, 5-8pm

Each year, we host a shortlist exhibition to finalise recruitment for our residency.
This year, we are proud to host: Siobhan Beaton, Scarlet Deans, Harry Gillingwater, Wiktoria Hebda, Anastasia Kyrpenko, Anna Mays, Sakhiwo Tshabalala, Lin Zhi Xian, Naira Yessengaliyeva, Jacelyn Zhen (Bbblob)
This multi-disciplinary show will feature both 2D and 3D work, filling our space with current projects from some of the best BA and MA graduates from London universities. The exhibition will occupy our entire gallery, with artists present during opening hours to discuss their practices and begin integrating with the local community ahead of their residency term in January.
Since 2004, The Muse has supported a residency programme offering subsidised studio practice and professional development. Recent graduates are invited to take ownership of a portion of the space, collaborate with an artist-led team, and develop their practices. This culminates in both group and solo exhibition experiences - successfully facilitating the transition from academia to the professional art world.
