Piero Manzoni canned 90 tins of “Artist’s Sh*t”, priced them at their weight in gold, and created one of conceptual art’s great provocations. Some reportedly later leaked or exploded. And he probably embellished some of the story behind it (it’s suggested that’s what his father would’ve said, had he been alive when Piero became an artist full time). Crap art? Or does the story change anything?

Album art might be the dodo bird of the art world.
It came from almost nothing, became a pillar of youth culture, and then, within 60 or 70 years, pretty much disappeared.

I went down a rabbit hole on this after my daughter asked for albums for Christmas. It made me realise how much we’ve lost as music moved from something we held in our hands to something we stream.

So I’ve made a four-part series on the history of album art: where it started, what it became, and what we lost.

I’ve just started this book, Philosophy of the Home, by Emanuele Coccia, and already it’s got me thinking about my home in interesting ways I’ve never even considered before. I’ll share a few more ideas from this book I the coming weeks. Thanks for the book tip

Malcolm Gladwell linked murder rates to badly kept gardens.
It started as an altruistic program from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in Philadelphia. They had mild hopes, but were stunned at the impact on crime in the local areas. Gladwell explored the results in his New Yorker review of Jens Ludwig's Unforgiving Places. No matter where we are, the art and design around us are impacting our moods, our decisions, and our lives.

It’s interesting how much more willing we are to work hard than risk social disapproval. But I wonder if learning how to connect with others has become the most underrated part of becoming happy in our culture? Do you get that seem feeling?
