ATLAS Gallery is one of the foremost galleries in London dealing exclusively in fine art photography. The gallery specialises in classic and modern 20th Century vintage photography, photojournalism, and fashion photography. Atlas represents major contemporary practitioners such as Nick Brandt, Arthur Elgort, Franco Fontana, Bastiaan Woudt, and Jimmy Nelson, and our holdings include work by diverse masters of photography such as Bill Brandt, René Burri, William Klein, and Irving Penn. We work directly with a number of artists’ estates, including Patrick Demarchelier, Terence Donovan, Ernst Haas, Marc Riboud, and Lucien Clergue providing access to a vast array of diverse photographic works. In 2012 we launched ATLAS Contemporary, creating a platform to introduce an exclusive group of extraordinary young to mid-career contemporary artists – such as Richard Caldicott, Frauke Eigen, Andreas Gefeller, Niko Luoma, Kacper Kowalski, John Messinger, and Tim Taylor. The gallery works closely with private clients and corporate collections to assemble important and unique art collections, as well as being actively involved in the acquisition of exceptional modern and contemporary works by many museums and public collections worldwide. ATLAS Gallery was founded in 1994 by Director and Owner Ben Burdett. Originally located in the Hoxton neighbourhood of London during the late 1990’s, the gallery became a well-known exhibition space in the heart of London’s new and vibrant contemporary art scene. Rooted in close observation and research, Andreas Gefeller’s practice often begins with a particular place, phenomenon or visual question. He works across a range of photographic processes, from multiple and long exposures to digital collage, sometimes approaching a space as a “human scanner” — systematically recording it piece by piece through hundreds of individual photographs.

Hebrides, featured in this post, is made using this process of combining multiple images, building a photograph from a multitude of individual views. The resulting image offers a way of seeing the landscape that moves beyond a single moment or viewpoint.

We are delighted to announce the opening of our latest solo exhibition of Düsseldorf photographer Andreas Gefeller.

Also premiering is a new work from Gefeller’s recent Insight Out (2025–ongoing) series, in which he moves
further away from the openly visible world, turning his attention to processes that increasingly shape our
lives but remain beyond our direct perception. Using photographically constructed images, he creates
complex, abstract structures that suggest the invisible networks of data, algorithms and artificial intelligence
operating beneath the surfaces of our digital lives. In works made from soap foam, Gefeller photographs
and reconstructs its fragile, disappearing structures layer by layer, creating intricate landscapes of lines,
threads and nodes.

We are pleased to announce our forthcoming exhibition, Surface Tension, presenting new and recent work by Andreas Gefeller.

Join us on Thursday 1st of October, from 6 to 8pm, for the Private View.

The exhibition asks: How do we understand the world when what we see no longer tells us the whole story?

Moving between natural phenomena, urban environments, water, light and the invisible infrastructures of the digital realm, Gefeller explores the shifting boundaries between the observed and the constructed, the visible and the imperceptible.

The Rain series is a key work from Andreas Gefeller’s The Other Side of Light. Taken with a medium-format camera, the photographs challenge our visual perception and invite us to reconsider our relationship with reality. In Rain, each drop becomes an allegory for our hyper-connected world: a message, a notification, a fragment of information. As quickly as one appears, it disappears, leaving only an ephemeral trace on the surface of the water.

This work is part of a series of four images, from the first to the last, each image becomes more and more condensed with rain drops, visually highlighting our experience with connectivity and information in this digital age.

On August 3, 1962, Marilyn Monroe appeared in LIFE magazine in what became known as her “Last Interview.” Two days later, she was gone. The published feature offered only a glimpse of the woman behind the icon - six pages and eight photographs. Yet behind it were 432 photographs by Allan Grant and four hours of recorded conversations with LIFE editor Richard Meryman, much of it never seen or heard.

At 100, Marilyn Monroe remains timeless. Here, she is not just seen, but heard—not interpreted, but present. This is Marilyn as she wanted to be seen.
