Cataloguing some stunning new Trevor Bell pieces and this one in particular caught my eye for the various incriptions on the verso. It is an early work from 1958-1959, around the time Bell had his first solo show at Waddington Galleries, in the catalogue of which Patrick Heron described Bell as ‘the best non-figurative painter under thirty’.

Aside from the signature, date and title, the verso also includes the address for John Wells's studio in Newlyn, Penzance; and some other dates and small notes.

Explore three of our most popular works from May!

1. Kasimir Malevich and Aleksei Kruchenykh, Troe (The Three), 1914.

With covers and illustrations by Malevich; Kruchenykh contributes an essay on the influence of Futurist writings on language. Published as a celebration and in memory of Elena G**o, one of the earliest Russian Futurists.

2. Richard Allen, Untitled charcoal painting, 1972-1994.

In 1972, Richard Allen began working with the form of the grid and cross. He saw these forms originating in the work of Malevich. Allen’s new charcoal painting technique begins with a drawing in charcoal, then washing and fixing the charcoal with cellulose acetate, often using the resist line which Allen had used in his earlier optical works.

3. André Lanskoy, Privé de tendresse, 1965.

By the 1960s, Russian-French artist André Lanskoy reached the peak of Lyrical Abstraction, transforming canvases into explosive, sculptural mosaics of pure colour and light. His works from this period reject rigid shapes for fluid, interlocking rhythms that feel alive.

A highlight from our current viewing room New Abstract IV is this wonderful Ben Nicholson.

This is one the works made by Ben Nicholson on trip to Greece in October 1972 (or shortly thereafter). After visiting Greece for the first time in 1959, Nicholson felt a strong connection to the place and returned several times in the following decades. A specific interest for Nicholson was the interplay of natural and man-made forms in the Greek landscape. The pencil and oil wash drawing is made on shaped paper and mounted on the artist’s prepared board.

Our current Viewing Rooms on Artsy are 'Peter Jackson (1930–2019)' and 'New Abstract IV'.

Peter Jackson (1930–2019), highlights the life and work of the Modern British artist and teacher. We recently presented a solo exhibition of the artist at the London Art Fair. The works chosen focused on materials and textures, aligning with the theme of the Platform section – The Unexpected – curated by Dr. Ferren Gipson.
