“My bath paintings originate from the Korean bathing practice known as ttaemiri (exfoliation scrubbing). The widespread adoption of ttaemiri is closely tied to the early 20th century, during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea, when the colonial government propagated the narrative of Koreans being “unclean and uncivilised.” In response, many Koreans began to bathe compulsively, turning the act into a symbolic gesture of liberation and resistance. My work began from a deep interest in how this historically traumatic practice has transformed into an everyday gesture. As I began performing ttaemiri regularly, not in Korea, but in Scotland, I came to realize how such a traumatic heritage profoundly shapes personal identity.” - Heeyoung Noh

This exhibition will launch ahead of Frieze week 2026 in London.⁣

“Henri Matisse commented that “a thimbleful of red is redder than a bucketful”. This may be fitting to bring into dialogue with Alsop’s paintings. The custom in which the paint has been sparingly applied in the work seems to indicate a material frugality and prudence. A making-do with limited means, of having to cut out and stick down using whatever is to hand whilst also thinking about how it fits (or doesn’t). Each painting is as an incongruous proposition, and this promptly connects to the (recent solo) exhibition’s title Eternal Crumble, denoting incompatible states of existence, like oil and water’s immiscibility. By making the painting, Alsop is concurrently un-making it. Accelerating and reversing; the impasse returns.“ Scott McCracken
