We love this drawing by a local artist and volunteer here at the Pumphouse Museum.

She's used a mix of gel pens, charcoal and acrylic which give it so much energy and motion, which really does encapsulate the marvel of Victorian engineering.

To see our Grade II listed Marshall engines in full working order, please visit us on Sundays for our running times of 12 noon and 2pm.

Have you ever spotted those intriguing 'Borough of Leyton' signs in our Pumphouse room and wondered about their history? 🤔 Well, wonder no more! These signs are a window into the fascinating past of this vibrant corner of East London.

Way back in 1873, Leyton was established as a local government district in southwest Essex. It encompassed not only Leyton, Leytonstone, and Cann Hall but also formed part of the London postal district and Metropolitan Police District.

But in 1965, Leyton underwent a transformative journey. The London Government Act of 1963 reshaped the landscape, abolishing the district and initiating a shift in its administrative boundaries. Leyton's former area bid farewell to Essex and joined the thriving metropolis of Greater London.

Today, Leyton is the southernmost gem in the London Borough of Waltham Forest in Greater London. It's a testament to how our vibrant boroughs have evolved over the years, embracing change while preserving their unique heritage.

Curious to learn more about the intriguing history of Leyton and its transformation since the swinging '60s? Pop in and have a chat with Melvin or any of our dedicated volunteers. They're a treasure trove of local knowledge and can't wait to share more stories with you!

Shout out to our volunteer Spencer AKA who's made some new ponds in our model train room - they look spectacular!

💧 He used a 2-part epoxy resin for a nice watery shine and tinted it with some Tamiya XF-73 dark green to get the right colour for the dark marshes water.

The resin needed to be left to dry for 24 hours although to cure it can take up to 7 days.

💣 You may recognise the bomb crater pond as the one on that was made by a wayward V2 rocket during a German air raid on 11th February 1945.

Spencer will be back in on Sunday from 11am putting the finishing touches to the ponds such as “blending” in the edges with reeds and shrubs.

Feel free to pop in and chat to him about modelling, trains and what it's like being a volunteer at the Pumphouse Museum!

We're looking for new Trustees. Please share if you know anyone who might be interested!

The Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum is seeking to recruit several trustees. We are looking for someone to work with the Chief Executive to develop and implement the Museum’s policies and procedures.

We would like to hear from candidates who have held senior positions at large, complex organisations and charities. Additionally, we encourage candidates who have experience and knowledge of charity law, charity administration, fundraising, STEM-based education and strategic communication.

Candidates must have an interest in heritage, industrial/local history, engineering or other area relevant to the museum.

Something we get asked a lot - what does a pumphouse actually do?

Did you know it was the place where all the p*e and poo used to go to be treated 💩

Back in the day it was then used as fertilser 🌾
