Keyseri in art silk 173x117 cm circa 1970s
Such rugs were not, as it often is erroneously thought, prayer rugs, but rather objects of veneration. They were often made by Sufi monks in their workshops adjacent to mosques.
'‘A carpet is a picture of God. That is the essential fact, fundamental to the people who produced the carpets, and fundamental to any proper understanding of these carpets (p.21). (-) Christopher Alexander A Foreshadowing of 21st Century Art

This is a vintage Berber rug from the Middle Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Such carpets were never intended to appear on the commercial market; they were intended to be used in homes by Berber families. Only natural dyes were used and wool sourced locally and their creation. Over the years, more than half a century later, the intricate design remained preserved only in part creating an nearly ghostly effect (half a rug; half a ghost). This rug is symbolic of the condition of the nomadic cultures in North Africa; almost gone for ever
