1835 the Australia city of Melbourne, Victoria, was founded. Probably the earliest surviving photographs of Melbourne were taken in 1854 by notable Edinburgh based photographer Alexander McGlashon (1811-1877). During the 1850s he also took a series of stereoviews across Central Scotland including what's thought to be the oldest known photographs of Dunblane Cathedral. The first is of Dunblane Cathedral from across the river taken in 1857/58. The second is of the roofless nave of Dunblane Cathedral from about 1853/4.

He was highly regarded for his portraits, photographing many well known individuals leading to the granting of a royal warrant in 1863, the first occasion on which a member of the royal family sat for an Edinburgh photographer. He also collaborated with Octavius Hill on several photographic projects. His work is held in many museums.

Thanks are accorded to Dunblane photo historian Alex Sinclair for sharing these images and information which he had researched. His wife, Eileen, is the great, great granddaughter of the photographer Alexander McGlashon

🗓✍️📖 1902 Scottish novelist, George Douglas Brown, best known for his highly influential novel "The House with the Green Shutters" died. In The Scots Magazine December 1982 issue author David Angus made a well-researched and compelling case for Dunblane being the basis for the fictional town in the novel, rather than Ayrshire's Ochiltree as is usually assumed. George Douglas Brown spent a month's holiday in a guest house in Dunblane (now private home Elmbank on the Doune Road) in 1886 and the views, buildings, names and events happening locally at that time are as described in the novel. And the "house" which is central to the story is Strathallan House, opposite Elmbank

🗓🌎📖 1955 the first edition of the Guinness Book of Records was published in Britain. On 20 February 2022 Dunblane's Rubber Chicken Theatre became Guinness World Records record holder for fastest theatrical production

🗓️📖 1875 author of "The 39 Steps" John Buchan was born. The 1959 version of the film of that book, starring actor Kenneth More, included scenes filmed in Dunblane where More's character leapt out of an upper window in the Burgh Chambers onto a truck which sped down Dunblane High Street
