We had a great visit from Forth Valley Sensory Centre this morning.

The Centre was one of the local organisations that received copies of our book, 20 Great Paintings: Highlights from The Smith. We are so pleased that they were finally able to see some of the artwork in person after reading about the collection during lockdown.

Thank you again to Museums Galleries Scotland for funding this project!

We are excited to announce our upcoming exhibition.

The Perfect Foil by Robert Mach will open to the public on Thursday 2 September. Robert uses familiar confectionery wrappers and applies them to iconic images and objects, transforming the everyday in to the extraordinary.

You might have noticed Robert working on one of his installations on the pillars of the museum. It looks awesome, please come and see for yourself when the exhibition opens!

Dear Friends,

We are sorry to let you know that we have to close the museum from today as one of our team has tested positive for covid. The rest of the team will also be tested, so we don’t know when we will be able to open again. We will keep you updated. We appreciate your support at this time.

It’s a stark reminder that this isn’t over. Take care and we will see you on the other side! ❤️

We want to send a very big thank you to everyone who came to our Family Garden Party on Saturday. 🎪

Even though the weather was not great it didn't stop the fun. We had such a blast singing songs with Merman Tom, blowing bubbles with Creative Electric, seeing fantastic circus skills with Rugg Tomcat and the Glasgow Community Circus, and shaking our tails with Unicorn Dance Party. What a magical day!

Apologies for anyone who had a long wait in the cafe on the day. Thanks for your patience with the team on this very busy afternoon.

This Spring, we created a booklet funded by Museums Galleries Scotland, tailored for people living within care communities. The book showcases some our favourite pieces from our art collection.

It’s been a great pleasure to share it with care homes and organisations and witness the booklet encouraging conversation and reminiscence.

We have received lovely feedback such as this from Susan, Support Worker at Clashfarquhar House: 'Thank you so much for giving us these, they will bring ongoing enjoyment to our residents.'

We're so excited for our Family Garden Party Saturday and really pleased to hear that many of you are planning to attend. We can't wait to see you🥳

For those who will be attending, please remember that the performances will be repeated throughout the day and there is limited spaces in our car park - so there is no need to get here when the day begins. You can drop in anytime between 11.00AM and 4.00PM to join the fun!

It is government guidance that you wear a face covering outdoors at events where it is likely that there are lots of people.

We will ask you to continue to wear a facemask indoors and also in the marquee during performances.

See you soon! 🎪

‘English Cottages’ 1800-1850 by David Cox the elder (1783-1859).

David Cox was a great watercolour master, whose late works are comparable to Turner, Constable and Boudin for their impressionistic methods.

He was born in Birmingham and after a brief education worked in his father's smithy. During a period of recuperation after breaking his leg, he was given a box of paints – and so his artistic talents were discovered.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) by Andrew Currie (1812-1891).

This plaster of Sir Walter Scott may have come into the Stirling area on account of Andrew Currie’s work in the 1870s.

Currie was a self-taught sculptor and antiquarian from Darnick, Melrose. His major work in Stirling is the monument to King Robert the Bruce on the Stirling Castle Esplanade, unveiled on 24th November 1877.

General information

Nestling beneath Stirling Castle, in the King’s Park, the ancient hunting grounds of the Stuart monarchs, is the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum. The Stirling Smith was founded in 1874 from the bequest of the artist Thomas Stuart Smith (d1869) and is dedicated to the promotion of cultural and historical heritage and the arts, from a local scale to nationally and beyond. The Smith houses many remarkable pieces, including the world’s oldest football (c1540), world’s oldest curling stone (1511), the Stirling Jug (1457), Bannockburn tartans, Wallace and Bruce memorabilia. Scottish history from a Stirling viewpoint including the Jacobite Risings, the 1820 Radical Rising, agricultural improvements, and drawings from the walls of Castlerankine Prisoner of War camp. The Stirling Smith creates and hosts a wide variety of different exhibitions every year, showcasing many different disciplines including fine art, social history, cultural history and other subjects of local and national interest. No trip to the Stirling Smith could possibly be complete without a visit to Ailie’s Garden. A popular and acclaimed visitor attraction in its own right, Ailie’s Garden is the culmination of a vast amount of voluntary effort which has resulted in one of the area’s finest sensory and biodiversity gardens. Visitors can also enjoy the Smith shop and the Gallery Cafe, serving delicious lunches, snacks and a variety of home baking. Just spotted this programme on BBC2 tonight at 8.00 p.m. It looks great and very useful if you want to know more about the role of a conservator.
Really enjoyed our visit to the Smith yesterday - and the coffee!
Very impressed with the newly done up Gallery Two. A quite perfect exhibition - delighted that 19th century women artists are represented. And particularly taken with Laura Brown's floor piece with the sound of the sea. Lovely.
