It's been a delight seeing our audiences engage with this new work by our former artist in residence over the last month. This exhibition encapsulates one of our missions as a Collection; to enable exchanges between art, research and teaching.

Developed during the residency at Stirling, CONTACT emerges from an evolving body of research that sits between artistic practice, landscape, and scientific enquiry. CONTACT acts as a companion and in-process body of work to her forthcoming FORTH2O funded 16mm film; revealing the still images, material traces, and quieter moments that emerged throughout the artist's residency and filmmaking process.

The exhibition is open Monday - Friday, 9am -5pm in Gallery 3 and 4, Pathfoot Building.

Supported by Stills Centre for Photography, Cinelab UK, The University of Stirling, Scotland Hydro Nation Chair and Lux Scotland.

Holding Place: Dundee, Otherwise is currently on display in our Research Exhibition Area in the A Corridor - Pathfoot.

The University of Stirling Art Collection is delighted to bring new collaborative work by John Post and Neil Crawford to our research exhibition space this Autumn.

Dundee, Scotland, is a city shaped by continual transformation. As redevelopment reshapes familiar streets and neighbourhoods, previous incarnations linger, and different histories and imagined futures sit alongside each other within everyday life. This exhibition presents Dundee, not as a series of distinct locations, but as an unfolding experience of encountering.

Together, the photographs construct a field through which viewers compile their own experience of place. The exhibition resists the logic of the map, where places are understood through fixed location, and instead adopts the logic of encounter. The constellations do not categorise the city; they organise moments of encounter. As with a constellation, the photographs themselves remain unchanged, yet the patterns perceived among them continually generate new meanings. Dundee is therefore not presented as something complete or already known but assembled through the connections viewers make as they move through the gallery.

Holding Place was developed as part of the Misfiring Places research project, a collaboration between Dr John Post and Dr Neil Crawford, funded with support from the Centre for the Sciences of Place and Memory. The project considers photography as an active way of knowing, not simply a means of documentation.

Pathfoot Gallery Three and Four
University of Stirling

CONTACT opens today in the Pathfoot Building — a new solo exhibition by our 2025–26 Artist in Residence, Jess Holdengarde.

Developed during her residency at Stirling, CONTACT emerges from an evolving body of research spanning artistic practice, climate research and scientific enquiry. The exhibition acts as a companion and in-process body of work to Holdengarde’s forthcoming 16mm film commission with FORTH2O - revealing the still images, material traces, and quieter moments that have emerged throughout Jess’ residency and filmmaking process. Visitors will have the opportunity to see a series of intimate photographic works alongside extracts from the film.

The new film is supported by policy innovation partnership FORTH2O and Scotland’s Hydro Nation Chair, with mentorship from LUX Scotland. Development of the photographic works has been supported by Stills Centre for Photography. Framing by Rabbet Framing.

Complementing the exhibition opening will be an in-conversation between Jess Holdengarde and Morwenna Kearsley on Wednesday 16 September, as part of Stirling Photography Festival. We'd love for you to come along, hear from Jess and Morwenna and see the new work.
