🏛️ THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE 1950'S MUSEUM ❤️

Cae Dai 1950’s Museum simply wouldn’t be what it is today without our amazing volunteers.

We have around 15 volunteers. Our volunteer team is wonderfully diverse. Some volunteers attend with additional support, while others volunteer independently, and we’re also lucky to have retired volunteers who give their time, knowledge and experience.

Our volunteers help with everything from welcoming visitors and sharing stories, to looking after displays, maintaining the museum and keeping everything running behind the scenes.

But volunteering at The 1950’s museum is about more than helping in a museum.
For some, it’s about building confidence, learning new skills, having a routine, meeting people and feeling part of a community. For others, it’s about sharing a lifetime of knowledge and experience and giving something back.

And at the heart of it all is Sparrow, now 87, who still works at the museum every day and continues to dedicate so much of his life to the museum.

❤️ Our museum is built on people — Sparrow, our volunteers and everyone who has helped Cae Dai along the way.

We couldn’t do it without you.

We had a lovely walking group from Colwyn Bay visit us this morning!

They meet every 6 weeks for a walk, lunch, a drink or two 🍻 and a good catch-up — and today they managed to arrive at Cae Dai just before the downpour! 🌧️

One of the most special things about Cae Dai Museum isn't the objects themselves… it's the memories they bring back.

Every day, we see visitors walk through our doors, spot something from their childhood, and suddenly their faces light up. A toy they once played with, a kitchen gadget their mum used, a radio their grandparents had, or a car they remember seeing on the streets.

The smiles, the laughter and the stories that follow are truly heartwarming.
We often hear:
💭 "My nan had one of those!"
💭 "I haven't seen one of these in years!"
💭 "This takes me right back to my childhood."

Our museum isn't just about preserving objects – it's about preserving memories, sparking conversations and helping people reconnect with the people and moments that shaped their lives.

Seeing generations share stories together is why we do what we do. ❤️

🤔 We asked Sparrow... "What's the strangest object in The 1950's Museum?"

His answer might surprise you...

🥊 A punch ball with an incredible connection to The Beatles!

This unusual item was originally a gift from John Lennon to his son, Julian Lennon.

Julian later gave it to his school friend, Royd Tolkien (great-grandson of author J.R.R. Tolkien), who in turn passed it on to his friend, artist Keith Hewitt, as a plaything for his two young sons.

Years later, Keith generously donated the punch ball to The 1950's Museum as part of our Beatles memorabilia collection, where it now has a permanent home.

It's one of those wonderful objects that proves every item has a story—and sometimes that story is just as fascinating as the object itself.

🚂 63 years since the Great Train Robbery!

Last Saturday marked 63 years since one of the most infamous crimes in British history – and we’re lucky enough to have a very special piece of that story here at Cae Dai 1950's museum.

Our Great Train Robbery truck came to us after Sparrow spotted it advertised in Classic Car magazine. After months of negotiating, he finally managed to secure it!

A few years later, Sparrow took the truck to the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham, where he met Bruce Reynolds, the mastermind behind the Great Train Robbery. The two became firm friends, with Bruce visiting Sparrow at Cae Dai numerous times before his death.

We’ve put together a short reel telling a little more of the story behind the truck, Sparrow and his friendship with Bruce. ❤️

🍬 The Answer Revealed! 🍬

Well done to everyone who had a guess on yesterday's mystery object! 👏

The answer is... a Celtic Autogrip Hygiene Server!

Once a common sight in shops, cafés and sweet counters, these clever dispensers were designed to allow customers to help themselves to sugar, sweets and other small items without handling the contents directly—quite an innovative idea for its time.

Long before modern hygiene regulations and sealed packaging became the norm, devices like this helped keep products cleaner while still being easy to dispense.

It's fascinating to see how businesses tackled everyday challenges and how ideas around hygiene and food service have evolved over the years.
