The Decoy at Wissington, Stoke by Nayland, Suffolk. The decoy lake attracted waterfowl to land on the open stretch of water alongside a river, this allowed hunters to run them into tunnels where they were netted and caught. Sir Peter Scott utilised this technique at Slimbridge for catching and ringing birds.
This rather wonderful oil by Rowland Suddaby utilises so many highlights of lime green, maroon, fern green, yellow and umber that we see the full spectrum of nature on close inspection: the woods about to burst into life, while the blue and silver shadows chase over the water, springtime and ducks on their way. Rowland Suddaby was, for many years, curator at Gainsborough’s House, Sudbury. Fine landscape painters are a tradition in Suffolk!
