Bushey Museum and Art Gallery The Museum tells the story of Bushey and its unique artistic history and social history. We display objects in our collection to do this.

We do not sell objects from our collection. We are open Thurs-Sun 11am-4pm It has a large collection of works and articles relating to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his world-renowned Art School. Also on show is the Lucy Kemp-Welch Memorial Trust Collection, including many of Lucy's superb paintings of horses. Bushey's social history is shown through displays on life in the village both in time o

f peace and war, some of the many locally made products and historic maps. The Friends of Bushey Museum has over 800 members making it one of the largest and most successful in the country! It supports the museum through fundraising activities and have a varied programme of meetings and events. You can join the friends online through the website or in the museum, annual subscription starts from as little £9.50! The museum's education service offers a wide range of interactive experiences for primary schools. Two of the most popular sessions are 'The Victorian Experience' and 'World War Two' experience. Bushey Museum is generously supported by Hertsmere Borough Council

Here are some more photos we took recently of our lovely museum building. This time they are all above the front door. The first is one of two lions immediately above the door. The second is the symbol of Bushey Urban District Council, of which we still have copies inside the Museum. It shows a tree and a bird symbolising the rural nature of Bushey along with the Hertfordshire hart and a palette for the art schools. The last is the Bushey Urban District Council badge with the date of construction 1909.

It was International Dog Day on 26th August. Its aims include celebrating dogs around the world and raising awareness of good doggy welfare. Many Bushey artists in our collection featured portraits of dogs. Here are "English Spaniels, a lithograph" by Dorothy Adamson "Fox Terriers" by Lucy Marguerite Frobisher "Head of a Mastiff" by L J Sewell, watercolour and "Sam: bronze sculpture" by Charles E Browne.

The Boys from Bushey are on television again! The new Radio Times tells us about Wham! visiting China in the 80s. "Wham! 10 Days in China" is on BBC Two at 9pm on Saturday 29th August. A US TV host calls it "a two-man cultural revolution"! A repeat of the compilation "Wham! at the BBC" follows at 10.25pm.

We are very pleased to say that this lovely cool-looking summer painting by Anthony A Slaney has been donated to us recently. We understand that it is not a scene from Bushey but Anthony Slaney was a former occupant of Meadow Studios, Bushey.

There's still time to see our "Off the Wall" exhibition until 11th October 2026 in the Anne Blessley Gallery. Pictured here is a selection of Hugh Wallis metalware on loan from various Friends of Bushey Museum.
Hugh Wallis was educated at Ackworth School, Yorkshire, (Quaker) as were many of his family. Hugh Wallis studied art at the Herkomer Art School, Bushey, Herts., in the early 1890s and exhibited fourteen times at the RA. Best known for his metalwork (not just copper) had a studio/workshop in Altrincham from 1900.

This is Bushey artist, John Rosser's impressionist view of a flower filled garden. It looks somewhat faded, as many gardens do at present after all the hot weather. John Rosser was a one-time occupier of one of the Meadow Studios in Bushey.
Rosser was an artist in acrylic, oil, gouache and watercolour, born in London. He studied at Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art and Watford School of Art, 1947–52. Rosser was fond of bright colours and pictures full of light, including landscapes, coastal scenes, gardens, figurative and studio subjects. His group shows included RA Summer Exhibitions, RBA, NEAC, RI and Blackheath Gallery. Rosser’s one-man exhibition at Conway Hall in 2001 illustrated pictures from the southeast of England, where he lived, plus travels on the continent, in New Zealand and Australia. Watford Museum holds some examples.

Feeling hot and bothered? We hope this photo of a sculpture by Charles Beacon in our current Creature Feature exhibition makes you feel cooler. New research has suggested that polar bears could be rewriting their DNA in order to adapt to warmer climates. Sounds like a good idea if it's possible.
