💛 Celebrating Volunteers’ Week 💛

This Volunteers’ Week, we’d like to say a huge thank you to the volunteers helping us prepare the Museum of Watford’s collection for its future home in the Town Hall, and the volunteers that help to facilitate our Museum on Tour.

Behind the scenes, our volunteers are working alongside the Collections Team to inventory, document and carefully record thousands of objects. From photographing and measuring items, to checking records and helping uncover the stories behind them, their work is a vital part of ensuring the collection is ready for the future.

As we plan for the next chapter of the Museum, volunteers are playing a key role in helping us understand, care for and share Watford’s heritage.

Thank you to every volunteer who gives their time, skills and enthusiasm to the Museum. Your contribution is helping shape the future of the collection and the stories we tell. ✨

🌙 Eid al-Adha Mubarak.

Today we join communities across Watford and around the world in celebrating Eid al-Adha, a festival marked by faith, generosity, and community.

At the Museum of Watford, we believe the stories of our town are shaped by the many cultures, traditions, and people who call Watford home. We wish everyone celebrating a joyful Eid filled with peace, family, and friendship.

✨ Eid Mubarak.

⚽ On this day in 1984, Watford Football Club made history - reaching their first ever FA Cup Final.

It was the pinnacle of an extraordinary journey shaped by Graham Taylor’s leadership and Elton John’s unwavering belief, taking Watford from the Fourth Division to Wembley in just a few unforgettable years. 🏆

Featured here from our collection is the iconic rosette that proudly sat on the front of the team bus as it carried the players to and from Wembley. Alongside it are programmes and photographs capturing the atmosphere, excitement, and pride felt across the town on that historic day.

From the sea of yellow and red in the stands and John Barnes dazzling at Wembley, these objects and images capture a moment that still means so much to Watford fans today 💛❤️🖤

Can you spot yourself in the crowd? 👀

For Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re spotlighting the sensory power of art 🌊🎨

In this untitled coastal landscape, Robert Hill uses thick layers of paint - a technique called impasto - to create movement and texture across the canvas. From the rolling waves to the sweeping grey skies, the painting almost feels alive.

Although we never touch museum paintings, we can still experience them through slow looking. Follow the brushstrokes with your eyes and imagine the sounds of the coast, the movement of the sea, and the feeling of standing by the shore.

Sometimes taking a few quiet moments to really look can help us slow down and reset 💛

This group of paintings was kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Chalkley.

For Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re sharing a simple activity called slow looking 👀🎨

Sometimes taking a few quiet minutes to really focus on one object can help slow racing thoughts, encourage mindfulness, and create a moment of calm.

This carousel takes you through five gentle steps:
✨ Pick an object or artwork
✨ Spend time really looking
✨ Notice small details
✨ Let your mind wander
✨ Write down your thoughts

There are no right or wrong answers - just curiosity, reflection, and taking a pause 💛

Why not give it a try today with something in your home, a favourite artwork online, or an object in a museum collection?

✨ Meet the Team: Collections ✨

Behind every object in the Museum of Watford collection is a huge amount of care, research, planning, and teamwork 💛

Peggy and Bella work together to care for the museum’s collections as we prepare for our exciting move to the Town Hall - from documenting and monitoring objects, to developing a collection that reflects the people, places, and stories that make Watford unique.

🗂️ Peggy, our Collections Development Manager, works on everything from collections policies and future planning to ensuring the museum meets professional SPECTRUM standards. She’s also leading preparations for moving the collections into their new home.

📦 Bella, our Collections Officer, works closely with volunteers to inventory the museum’s entire collection, supports work experience placements, oversees documentation and acquisitions, and helps ensure the collection is cared for day-to-day.

Together - alongside our brilliant volunteers - they help preserve Watford’s history for future generations ✨
