What’s On This September✨

Creative Conversations: Studio Ceramics is on now, our largest-ever display of mid to late 20th-century British studio ceramics, running until 20 September.

Alongside it, don’t miss Jane MacFarlane’s pop-up installation, exploring abandoned ceramics and the stories objects carry.

Opening later this month, Finnish Design: Myths & Moomins explores how nature, mythology and folklore have shaped Finnish modernist design, featuring rare Moomin loans from Moomin Characters and iconic works by some of Finland’s most celebrated designers.

Don’t miss the first Exhibition Late on the 4th of September from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Meet the curator, enjoy refreshments, and experience the collection!

Remember this from 2023?

Our Captain Ed’s Shirts window exhibition brought a vibrant splash of colour to Queen’s Road, celebrating the iconic shirts that became a familiar sight around Bristol Harbour.

Handmade by Mary Hall for her husband Ed, each shirt told a story and reflected the personality of a much-loved Bristol legend.

You can still spot Ed at the Stradling Collection from time to time, where he continues to volunteer!

Curator’s Shelfie

Our collection is remarkable for its sheer variety. When visitors join a tour and peek into our downstairs storage, they often compare it to an Aladdin’s cave, and we can see why.

It’s a joyful gathering of studio ceramics, glass, wood and sculpture, all happily living side by side. Unexpected combinations catch the eye, spark curiosity and occasionally provoke a second look. It’s a little chaotic, a lot playful, and full of treasures waiting to be discovered.

Widely regarded as one of the most important figures in British studio pottery, Lucie Rie transformed the field through her refined forms, vibrant glazes, and Modernist approach. Her work offered a fresh alternative to the dominant trends in British ceramics and remains highly influential today.

Decorated with fine scraffito lines scratched through a manganese surface to reveal the pale clay beneath, this vase reflects Lucie Rie’s interest in ancient pottery traditions. It was gifted to Ken Stradling by a friend who worked at Primavera gallery.

Her work can be viewed in Creative Conversations: Studio Ceramics from the Stradling Collection.
