Thanks to Bognor Regis Town Council for rehanging our sign earlier today, which was damaged when it blew down in a gale back in the Spring. The sign, which was rebuilt by local signwriter Keith Atherfold, now features an extra safety chain to stop it falling on passers by should it happen again.

This plate in a book entitled 'Sussex 100 years ago' published in 1969 caught my eye as my immediate thought was that the artist had used a bit of artistic licence. However, thinking on it, it might not be far off what one might have seen, say in 1869. Yes this terrace called Colebrook would have been there (RHS villa is now site of new Premier Inn) and the site to the left of the terrace, nick-named the cabbage patch, was still undeveloped. Before shingle was introduced to reduce flooding, there was a long drop from the promenade to the beach, so yes at high tide the depth of water would be there to accommodate boats and the waves could be this choppy. So all entirely feasible, but where I struggle is whether in reality there would be that many boats in such conditions so close to a sea wall? Would visitors really want to experience such a trip? Or was it just the artist making an otherwise uneventful scene a little more exciting? We saw these photos in the late Hal Brooks' book 'Clown etc' and it got us wondering, what happened to these, which used to spin in the Regis Centre concourse? If you know, please share!
