Was British Attack on French Naval Base of Mers El Kébir in WW2 Justified? The Royal Navy attack on the French naval base at Mers-el-Kébir was part of Operation Catapult. The operation began on July 3rd, 1940, and its goal was to seize or destroy French naval ships across the globe in order to prevent the Axis powers from using them. The British colonial outpost of Singapore had already captured French vessels before the operation.

Mers-el-Kébir is seen by some as controversial which I find bewildering. The French were given options, but they chose not to comply with the British demands. A common argument against Mers-el-Kébir is that Vichy France was neutral; however, this is far from the truth. Vichy France was a German puppet state that helped support the German war effort.

Additionally, in 1942, the Germans did attempt to seize the remaining French vessels at Toulon; however, the French scuttled the ships.

The Greatest Building in Victorian London: The Crystal Palace! Crystal Palace was originally built for the 1851 Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations. There was initially scepticism surrounding the project; however, once it opened, it received widespread praise.

After the exhibition, it was moved to Sydenham, where it stood until 1936 when it was destroyed by fire. Winston Churchill remarked, “This is the end of an age.”

The Second World War ended any realistic chance of rebuilding it, and by the post-war era anti-Victorian sentiment and architecture were widespread in Britain.

British Occupation of Germany After WW1? The British occupation zone was mainly focused around Cologne however they withdrew from Cologne in 1926 to the city of Wiesbaden. On 14th September 1929 the last British troops left Germany after their more than ten year occupation of the Rhineland.

What was the difference between German air raid shelters and British air shelters in WW2?

It’s important to note that the stampede at Bethnal Green was not caused by a bomb, as no bomb hit the area that night. It is generally believed that the testing of anti-aircraft guns in nearby Victoria Park made people think they were under attack, which contributed to the panic and resulting disaster.

Of course, there were other types of air raid shelters not mentioned in the video, such as cellars, which were heavily used in both Britain and Germany. Many people took refuge in the basements of homes, apartment buildings, and public buildings during air raids.

In Hastings, the town’s caves were also used as air raid shelters.
