At blackShed this week, we’ve been enjoying the exhibition with so many visitors coming through for Palimpsests, by Małgorzata Dawidek.
Some come specifically for the exhibition, others are discovering blackShed for the first time and a chat. We’re proud of the calm, welcoming space we’ve created here. It’s a great place to experience art, and a great way to escape. Why not combine your visit with lunch at the Salehurst Halt, or even just a walk through our amazing 55 acre woodland?

If you want more, hoin us on Saturday 7 November, definitely a date to put in your diary, an opportunity to meet Malgosha, we have invited her to talk about her project and the work behind Palimpsests. This is a free event, and more details to follow shortly. Keep an eye on or subscribe for website updates.

A wonderful afternoon at blackShed as we opened PALIMPSESTS, the new exhibition by Małgorzata Dawidek.

Our thanks to everyone who joined us, and particularly to Małgorzata for a fascinating and thoughtful talk that took us far beyond the works on the gallery walls.

At the heart of the exhibition is Marie de France, one of the earliest known women writers in Britain, whose remarkable literary legacy reaches back to the 12th century.

Through years of research, encounters with medieval artefacts, and an exploration of the landscapes and histories of East Sussex, Małgorzata invites us to reconsider Marie’s world, and perhaps to reflect on what it meant to be a woman writing, observing and interpreting the world some 800 years ago.

There is a remarkable depth to this exhibition, much of which only begins to reveal itself as we spend time with the work.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the opening such a memorable occasion.

PALIMPSESTS is now open until 14th Nov

Current install of Palimpsests Małgorzata Dawidek opens this Saturday 10th October the official launch and meet the artist from 2pm - 4pm blackShed gallery.

Palimpsests is a body of work that emerged from artist residency at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery.

Descriptions of the natural world in the writings of Marie de France (c.1160-1215) regarded as the first British female author.

The artist has created a fascinating series of works the reconstructs the natural-cultural landscapes of 12th & 13th centuries England’s southern coast - places shaped simultaneously by natural processes and by human presence, memory and imagination.

Please come and join us during what promises to be an extraordinary experience.

This exhibition has been made possible with funding from East Sussex Arts Partnership, Rother District Council, Ministry of Culture and Heritage Republic of Poland, Adam Mickiewi Institute, Society of Authors Zaiks and The Eaton Fund.

A reminder that Palimpsests opens this Saturday 10th October, with a special opening event between 2:00pm & 4:00pm. All are welcome and we look forward to celebrating this wonderful exhibition with you all.

Today was Ruben’s last day with us, before he embarks upon his travelling adventures in Australia and an exciting new chapter. 

Ruben has been at blackShed for 4 years, after doing a week’s work experience with us and has been, not only a highly skilled picture framer, but also our gallery technician and an amazing practical problem-solver! He has been an integral part of the team here and we wish him all the best for the next phase of his life 🌞🌿🐬

A lovely afternoon in the studio yesterday with artist Małgorzata Dawidek, as we begin preparations for her forthcoming exhibition, PALIMPSESTS. Here we are taking a closer look at one of her intricate works from a series developed following her residency at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, exploring the medieval landscapes, history and literature of our region. It’s always a pleasure spending time with Małgorzata. Installation begins over the next few days, and we’re looking forward to sharing the finished exhibition with you! Now we move forward in time to Małgorzata’s recent work and upcoming exhibition with us, ‘Palimpsests’, following her winning the Hastings Open 2022, undertaking a period of research and resulting residency at Hastings Museum & Art Gallery. Whilst in residence, Dawidek encountered artefacts in medieval collections which brought her closer to Marie de France (c.1160-1215), Britain’s earliest known female writer.

Drawing on descriptions of the natural world in Dame Marie’s writings, the artist has created a photographic and drawing-based series that reconstructs the natural-cultural landscapes of 12th & 13th centuries England’s southern coast – places shaped simultaneously by natural processes and by human presence, memory, history and imagination.

Moving away from traditional ways of illustrating stories, Dawidek focuses on documenting the realities of Marie’s period: both those described by the poet in Lais and Fables, and those preserved in material culture. In the course of her research, she collaborated with curators of medieval collections, studying artefacts held by Hastings Museum & Art Gallery, Bexhill Museum and Winchelsea Court Hall Museum. Her investigation also involved documenting objects, polychrome decoration and graffiti in the medieval churches of East Sussex – All Saints in Old Town Parish in Hastings, St Peter’s in Bexhill-on-Sea Old Town, and St Thomas of Martyr in Winchelsea, as well as at Dover Castle, Hastings Castle and Pevensey Castle.
