Over the last few weeks our gardening team have been transforming the fountain bed displays, changing the annual bedding as we welcome the summer months.

After carefully lifting springtime bulbs and generously mulching, the gardeners have planted a mix of Tithonia, Marigolds and Zinnias that have all been grown from seed onsite. Canna and self seeded poppies have also been incorporated into the planting
scheme.

We cannot wait to see these beds develop and grow over the summer adding a variety of colour, height and interest around the fountain!

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who help make Quex Gardens such a special place in the heart of Thanet. 🌿

From Lesley, who tends to our sweet peas every week, to David, who discovered a passion for gardening after starting as a steward in Quex House.

To Vic, Ham, Russell and Paul, whose hard work keeps our flower beds looking their best, and our wonderful Sunshine Project volunteers, who support everything from leaf collecting, mulching and propagation to weeding all year round.

Our volunteer community extends far beyond these names. We’re proud to work alongside community groups, college students, people with supported learning disabilities, and residents from local care homes and day centres. Everyone's contribution makes a huge difference.

Thank you to all our garden volunteers. Your time, dedication and enthusiasm help make Quex Gardens the special place it is today.💚

Are you interested in volunteering?

We're always looking for people of all abilities and backgrounds. Visit our website to fill in an application form!

High temperatures this week did not deter The Sunshine Project, who put on hats and suncream and set to work cleaning the beautiful terrace area ready for summer visitors and guests to enjoy!

The original reclaimed tiles have had a much need sweep and scrub and the upcycled garden furniture has been restored, painted and washed down ready for summer picnics and relaxing in the shade.

Why not plan a visit and come and enjoy this space and views over the gardens?

We are open Friday to Sunday 11am-4pm.

Our Q***r Nature guided museum tours are returning in June to celebrate Pride Month 🌈

On Friday 12 June we’re opening the museum after hours for a special extended evening edition of this popular tour. Join us to explore the collections with the tour’s creator and expert guide, Fenja Schultz, and enjoy a complimentary drink on arrival.

The evening tour begins at 5:30pm and lasts one hour. Tickets are £20 and include refreshments plus exclusive access to the museum. Book here: https://powell-cottonmuseum.org/event/queer-nature-after-hours/

Across the weekend, from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 June, you can also drop in during our open days to explore with a regular guided tour or follow our all-ages self-guided trail.

Guided tours run at 12:00pm and 2:30pm each day and are included with standard admission.

For families, Young Explorers, and anyone preferring a more relaxed visit, our self-guided trail offers a chance to discover animal and plant diversity across the museum and gardens - encouraging curiosity and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.

10% of admission tickets will be donated to Margate Pride

The butterflies and moths in our handling collection are getting an upgrade 🦋

For years, they have been stored pined into Tupperware containers, but we now have the resources to rehouse them in more suitable insect display boxes.

This will allow people to see these beautiful creatures and expand access to visitors while limiting the danger they are put in from interactions with people and the environment.

While we carry out important work behind the scenes to care for and preserve our butterfly collection, the displays will be temporarily unavailable to visitors.

But don’t worry, the butterflies will be back soon, and we’ll let you know as soon as the displays return.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

The Sunshine Project have been busy preparing for the summer season ahead and have tackled a number of late spring jobs this week.

They have been pricking out Zinnias ready for the Quex Gardens summer bedding display and essential jobs like pruning the Forsythia!

How have you been preparing for summer in the garden?
