Keeping Warm and Readying for the New Year!

During the recent cold and wet weather, participants at The Sunshine Project have been staying indoors, diligently restoring sets of seats and tables generously donated by a kind member of the public.

With great patience and care, our group has scraped away old paint, skillfully repainted the surfaces, and reinforced the table joints to ensure the furniture is safe, durable, and ready to withstand the elements.

These seats and tables will soon become a welcoming feature, inviting visitors and participants alike to relax, admire the views, and experience the ever-changing beauty of the seasons in our gardens.

This restoration effort not only breathes new life into these outdoor furnishings but also embodies the spirit of renewal and resourcefulness that lies at the heart of The Sunshine Project.

We are immensely grateful for the support that makes projects like this possible. The Sunshine Project is proud to receive a grant from AIM Connected Communities, funded by the DCMS Know Your Neighbourhood Fund through Arts Council England.

Creative Connections with Jambo Africa UK!

It was all smiles for the Jambo Africa UK group as they unveiled their stunning clay creations fresh from the kiln! Photographed in our clay studio, these unique pieces were carefully transported and unpacked for everyone to admire.
Earlier this year, the group explored their creativity in a pottery workshop led by our talented Artist in Residence, Julia Ellen Lancaster.

Adding even more vibrant energy, Jambo Africa hosted an African drumming workshop for our Garden Sunshine participants. Together, they drummed, cheered, and created rhythms that broke barriers and lifted spirits!

Jambo Africa UK is dedicated to empowering young people and their families from disadvantaged and minority backgrounds. Through life coaching, mentorship, FGM awareness, and their incredible drumming workshops, they provide emotional guidance while fostering inclusivity and connection.

This collaborative effort is part of The Sunshine Project, which receives a grant from AIM Connected Communities. AIM Connected Communities is proudly funded by the DCMS Know Your Neighbourhood Fund through Arts Council England.

Thank you to Association of Independent Museums, Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Arts Council England for their support in making moments like these possible!

Let’s celebrate creativity, culture, and community together.

This week our colleagues came together with the intention of reviewing our popular Quex House tour to make it more engaging, memorable and immersive.

Our archivist (and font of knowledge) spent her time sharing tales of how she has pieced together written accounts, notes, anecdotal evidence and photographs to piece together a multitude of stories and impressions that may be missing from the teams current knowledge.

We then workshopped our ideas to generate themes and potential interventions to add interest, intrigue and memories we can share with our visitors.

We’ve now got launchpads of inspiration for more research, media, sensory experience and play that we can build into our tours next year.

This process is just beginning and we would love to get some feedback from our visitors. We would love to know from you:

What are your favourite stories or memories about the times, place and people of Quex House?

What’s the best tour you’ve ever been on and what made it special?

Have you ever taken your children on a tour that has captivated them? What was special about it?

Would you like to join a test tour when we are ready to share?

Welcome back to another day in the life with Museum Team Member, Daiz!

Today Daiz shares that their day included helping to move a huge taxidermy elephant's head, pest trapping, moving specimens into the big freezer to kill potential pests and a spot of curtain repairing! What does a typical workday involve for you?

Progress and Developments in Collections Management

On Tuesday, 3rd December, two of our Collections team visited Canterbury Cathedral to meet with their Archives team. They use the same Collections Management System (CMS) we’ve recently adopted. It was a fantastic opportunity to see how they manage their diverse collections—objects, library materials, and archives—and gain insights into how this powerful system works in practice.

Highlights of the day included:

- A tour of the Cathedral’s archives and library.
- Exploring the awe-inspiring Cathedral itself.
- Valuable discussions about best practices, potential challenges, and handy tips.

This CMS is a major upgrade from spreadsheets, enabling us to more effectively catalogue, care for, and share our collections. Eventually, we will have an online catalogue that can be accessed worldwide. It’s a long-term project (years in the making!), but learning from others makes the process less daunting and more inspiring.

In a time of challenges across the sector, collaboration and knowledge-sharing are more important than ever. A big thank you to the team at Canterbury Cathedral for their hospitality and insights!

Winter Warmth and Festive Preparations at the Sunshine Project

Despite the wet weather, our Sunshine participants —including our beloved garden cat—kept warm by the fires, now lit to fend off the cold. Indoors, they embraced the season’s spirit by crafting natural festive decorations using tree branches gathered from our grounds.

Their efforts also helped prepare our Winter Garden for the upcoming wreath-making workshops, a cherished tradition that brings creativity and community together. Additionally, we’re getting ready to host our Festive Party, a heartfelt celebration for our dedicated staff and garden volunteers—an incredible team who make the Sunshine Project possible.

This season, the warmth of the Sunshine Project shines even brighter, as we continue to foster connection, creativity, and a sense of belonging.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of AIM Connected Communities, funded by the DCMS Know Your Neighbourhood Fund through Arts Council England, which helps make projects like this possible.

Join Daiz for another day in the life behind the scenes at the museum. There’s an awful lot going on with interior building repairs and redecoration, conservation and cleaning. If you have ever thought about what it’s like to work in a museum, Daiz’s videos show you the variety of tasks and work we might need to get involved with.

Behind the scenes discovery!

During our gallery redecoration works, one of the workmen found a sheet of paper hidden behind a display case in gallery 3! The document appears to be handwirtten by Hannah Powell-Cotton (blue writing) and her son Christopher (black writing).

From the text which we have been able to read, we can tell it is a written plan of where different objects will be displayed in the museum. It seems Hannah's text suggests plans and ideas for where new display cases will go; "could they make a case in Hall - passage when this is built" and how to display the objects; "could in some cases illustrate a whole. if a case - in others, it could have to illustrate a single object. as many as sensible (?) i.e. not taking up too much room".

Christopher's notes appear to respond to Hannah's; " Yes - but we have insufficient storage room to afford to show only a few selected specimens - otherwise agreed in principle".

Historic buildings often hold secrets that are only discovered when building works take place so this is very exciting. This precious note will now be accessioned into our archive and form part of the story of our museum.

Seasons Turning at the Sunshine Project.

This month at the Sunshine Project, we’ve been busy embracing the natural cycle of the garden. Our amazing volunteers tackled the satisfying task of weeding and uprooting our tomato plant pots.

The best part? Reusing the nutrient-rich soil to replenish our raised beds—it’s a great way to give back to the earth that’s given us so much.

We also said goodbye to our towering sunflowers —symbols of summer's warmth and joy, chopping them down into wheelbarrow-friendly pieces. They’re off to the compost heap , where they’ll break down and become part of next season’s growth. It’s a little bittersweet, but it’s all part of the cycle.

With our raised bed frames now prepped and ready, we’re excited to see what the next sowing season will bring. Big thanks to everyone who pitched in this month— The cycle of time in our garden is always moving forward, and this month’s work is another step toward a new season of growth.

A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who’ve been part of this effort. Your hard work and dedication help keep the Sunshine Project thriving!

The Queen Bee Returns to Quex Gardens!

We’re thrilled to announce that our Queen Bee sculpture has made her way back to Quex Gardens after spending a season at Monkton Nature Reserve as part of their First Sculpture Trail!

This journey isn’t just about her travels—it’s a symbol of collaboration between spaces that celebrate biodiversity and art, bringing communities together in appreciation of nature’s wonders.

Now proudly standing near our Bee Hives, the Queen Bee represents the critical role pollinators play in our environment. Crafted with love and care from natural materials like Willow, Bracken, Pine Cones, and Teasels, she’s also a shining example of our eco-friendly and sustainable approach.

A huge thank you to our amazing Sunshine Volunteers and Participants who poured their creativity and dedication into this remarkable piece. Your work continues to inspire us all to cherish the beauty of sustainability and the delicate balance of our ecosystems.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of AIM Connected Communities, funded by the DCMS Know Your Neighbourhood Fund through Arts Council England, which helps make projects like this possible.

Next time, on your visit to the Powell-Cotton Museum, Quex House.

Continuing our work at the Sunshine Project at Quex Gardens!

Last week, one of our dedicated tile sorters was hard at work as we prepare to reuse our historic tiles for the outdoor patio and kitchen area outside our Wintergarden.

Recycling these beautiful tiles not only enhances our space but also honors the history of our garden. We can’t wait to see how it all comes together!

A huge thank you to our volunteers for their commitment and creativity. Stay tuned for updates as we bring new life to this area!
