The much visited P22 Cold War patrol boat based at Sandwich Quay has closed and has been lifted out at Sandwich Marina for the winter hoping that new owners can be found to take her forward next year.
Due to family ill health Mr Field has had to change his focus and can no longer spend so much time being in charge of the vessel and is very very great full to the wonderful re enactor’s and volunteers that helped him keep the boat alive, telling its special Cold War history to the schools and visitors over the past eight years. Mr Field is contacting other Museums and organisations hoping they can take this special vessel forward in 2025.

This full-size Lancaster Bomber sculpture will be mounted on a steel frame to create the illusion of flight. With a wingspan of 31 meters, it will soar higher than the iconic Angel of the North. P22 is a veteran of the Rhine River Patrol, as part of United States Navy Force Germany (USNAVFORGER) created in 1945 at the start of the Cold War. She was built and patrolled the Rhine from 1952. P22 was built by German ship builders to American design and specifications. Whilst operated by the U.S.N. her duties included fast patrols of the Rhine, she was used to Police and perform checks on all river traffic. 1958 was the year that made the Rhine Patrol craft unique as the Americans handed over all the vessels to the German Army who then patrolled the Rhine for the following 10 years.
After many years of hard work and having extensive work to make her safe in the water, she now resides at the quayside in Sandwich, Kent. UK. as a living museum to the Cold War Period, she is also available for more leisurely trips down the River, at over 65 years old, 21 Knots is asking a little much.
P22 is manned by volunteers who perform the duties of the crew in both authentic USN uniforms and as guides to show you around and immerse you in the sounds and action of the time, open to public most weekends (April - October) from 1030 to 1700, weather permitting, come along and take a look around this unique piece of history.
