'My Toys Cars' by Iain Kemp is now on display in the West Corridor near the Friends Cafe (B18).
For more than 35 years, Iain worked as a photographer, capturing interiors and architecture across the world. Iain’s career has taken him into remarkable spaces, documenting design, craftsmanship, and the stories embedded within the built environment. Yet some of the greatest pleasure he found behind the camera has come from a much smaller subject: this collection of toy cars.
The cars were handed down to him by his uncle. He played with them as a child, his children played with them, and now his grandchild enjoys them with the same fascination and delight. Their vibrant colours and timeless designs have survived decades of handling, imagination, and play.
Every scratch, dent, and worn surface bears witness to a family history that spans generations. What might appear as imperfections are, in fact, traces of lives lived, childhoods shared, and memories passed from one hand to another. They are objects that have accumulated stories over time, becoming far more valuable than the materials from which they were made.
Through this photographic collection, he wants to celebrate not only their beauty and character, but also their remarkable ability to connect generations. Having spent a lifetime photographing places around the world, he finds something uniquely meaningful in turning his lens towards these small, treasured companions from his own family’s story.
