The Rediscovering the Allen Gallery project, made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund, will offer a range of exciting volunteering opportunities from Front of House to creative workshops support and gallery collections work. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to revitalise the Allen Gallery and offer an exciting new activities programme for our community. Thank you to everyone who attended our Hands that Made History event for Heritage Open Days this weekend! What an amazing day. With activities from blacksmithing and weaving to metal-detecting, chain-mail making, herbal medicine and jousting.... the whole museum was buzzing. Over 700 people came through the door during the four-hour event and the feedback has been amazing! Hands that Made History certainly captured the imagination of visitors young and old - we have had requests for workshops with schools and young visitors who have been inspired to learn a new skill. We are listening and can't wait to build on this!

Huge thanks to the team at Alton Assembly Rooms and to our hard working museum staff and volunteers for bringing everyone together for a truly impressive event. And to the brilliant Herigeas Hundas Butser IX Legion Experience the Iron Age and Lord Hopton's Regiment of Foote for bringing so much energy, action and expert historical knowledge to the heart of Alton. It really brought our Curtis Museum alive and showed what we can achieve when we work together!

We’re hard at work here at the Curtis Museum, getting ready for Heritage Open Day tomorrow! Heritage Open Days

We’ve got our brilliant reenactors and living history experts joining us, including Herigeas Hundas Butser IX Legion

We have a range of activities including clay tile painting, living history displays, metal detecting, weaving, museum object handling, and reenactors!

Our "hands that made history" theme was inspired by the pottery and craft at the heart of the Rediscovering the Allen Gallery Project and the event has been supported in part with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Thanks to National Lottery players, Hampshire Cultural Trust has been able to revitalise the Gallery and offer an exciting new activities programme, currently being hosted here at the museum. Our community programme is delivered with the generous additional support of East Hampshire District Council and Alton Town Council

Following increasing financial pressures, the Museum's future is currently uncertain. Share your views to help shape a more resilient and relevant future for the Curtis Museum.
