Sovereigns of the Abyss, 2026

Ásthildur Jónsdóttir is an Icelandic artist, curator and renowned art educator who has exhibited widely across Europe and the United States. For several years Ásthildur has been involved with issues concerning the ecology of the planet. In her work she is concerned about places/environment, memories, recollection and identity through authorship and collaboration, questioning individuality, exploring what is unique and what is common.

With her works, she wants to bring attention to how human interaction can further both the understanding and practice of wellbeing with respect to the integrity of nature. Participation plays an essential role in her works. With participation, she creates settings for people to experience significance through actions performed in close connection with the spirits of nature. She often works with installations in contemporary context and with voices of participants from a selected place

Ásthildur Jónsdóttir holds a Joint Ph.d. and Doctor of Arts from University of Iceland, school of Education and University of Lapland, Finland and a MA from New York University. Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. And she has held academic leadership positions at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Through exhibitions, curatorial projects and international lectures, she brings together artistic inquiry, education and community engagement.

Created in collaboration with visual artist Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir, 2025

Mikael Lind is a composer of experimental ambient music, currently residing in Reykjavik, Iceland. He has got seven full-length releases under his belt, as well as a number of digital releases, and has earned a Master’s degree in electronic music production from the University of Edinburgh.

Mikael’s music is often based around simple themes that gradually evolve into more complex creations, where sounds and textures are given enough space to slowly introduce themselves, expand, and finally be manipulated into something different. There’s a certain minimalism and sparseness in the choice of instruments, but not in how these instruments are treated. A simple piano line might be carefully developed into a full ambient orchestration with the help of electronic techniques of sound manipulation.

Mikael enjoys the cold climate of the North, and gets inspired by symmetries in his environment, as well as by man-made buildings or artefacts that gradually change and deteriorate due to the forces of nature. He finds beauty in both the simple and the sublime, and this is something that his music wants to express. Complexity – when properly understood – is a wonderful thing, but should never be an end in itself.

Sigga Björg Sigurðardóttir is a visual artist that lives and works in Reykjavík, Iceland. She works primarily with drawing and creates installations that consist of works on paper, walldrawings, animation and sculpture. Her method of relentless drawing often reveals human behaviour and emotion in their most primitive and wild form, and explores the sometimes quite vague boundaries between human and beast.

Sigga has built an international career with solo and group exhibitions across Europe and North America. Her work has been presented in prominent museums and contemporary art institutions. She is represented in major public and private collections internationally.

Hringmyrkvun / Circular Blackout

Circular Blackout is a stop-motion video and sound installation originally created in 2025 for a large fish-oil tank in the remote village of Raufarhöfn. Located at the northeasternmost point of Iceland, Raufarhöfn’s remote and distinctive surroundings played a central role in the development of the work. For the soundscape, Mikael Lind used field recordings captured from the surrounding sea, cost and land.

Circular Blackout embodies existence as a process of perpetual transformation. Time unfolds through shifting light and shadow, echoing our endless journey. Seventeen hand-drawn images -constantly erased and redrawn - form its visual core: translucent shapes drift, merge, and multiply, evoking landscapes, tides, and living forms.
Primitive electronics and ambient recordings weave through the visuals, asserting their own rhythm. The sounds amplify the work’s atmosphere, breathing life into its evolving structure.

Fusion and transformation define Sigga Björg and Mikael Lind’s collaborations. Sigga’s pencil lines, never fully erased, leave traces like strands of DNA, while Mikael’s sounds linger, shaping the work’s future. Together, their co-creation mirrors life itself: a perpetual cycle of becoming, where every element evolves into something new.

For "Slowly the Tide Returns" Camilla Vuorenmaa created the mural "Embrace, 2026". She developed the theme of the site specific mural around the idea of consent, connecting it to Vesterbro’s history as a red-light district, where C4 Projects is located, and combining it with elements from nature. The idea was two people in gentle enbrace. Vuorenmaa see them as a q***r couple, but they can be whatever a viewer sees in them.

Camilla Vuorenmaa is a Finnish artist living and working in Helsinki, Finland. She has received several prestigious art awards and has had major solo exhibitions at museums in her home country, alongside exhibitions internationally. Her work has been shown widely across the Nordic countries, earning recognition beyond Finland. She is represented in numerous public and private collections, including major museum collections in Finland and Sweden.

Vuorenmaa’s carved wood paintings are hybrids of sculpture and painting that require time and physical strength to create. Some of the reliefs are like partitions, others feature elements of wall painting, a medium Vuorenmaa likes for its immediacy, momentariness and spatiality.

"Slowly the Tide Returns" brings together works that, through animation, sound, textiles, painting, installation, embroidery and collaborative processes, approach the
ocean as more than a geographical entity or geological condition. It also becomes a
connective space between people, histories, places and ecologies across the Nordic
region.
Through both collective and individual works, the artists explore the sea and the coast as conditions for existence, memory and transformation.
Like human memory, the sea is a dynamic, living archive: a space where forgetting
and remembering flow into one another, shifting between what is preserved and what
is lost.
