Happy 4th of July 2026 from all of us at WWII Museum Curacao
I was just finishing my 4th of July Tour inside our WWII Museum
when a small group of young children (8 to 10 years old) from the
neighborhood entered the museum and asked if they could look
around. Of course that was no problem. When they came up to the
1945 USS Missouri flag, one of the children with a proud look on her face said that she knows the history of the American flag.
So, I gave her the platform to tell me what she knew.
She first asked me if I knew what the stripes on the flag stand for.
I answered saying that the American flag has 13 stripes and that
these stripes represent the 13 original colonies that declared
Independence.
Yes, that is correct, she confirmed, but there is another thing
hidden in these 13 stripes.
Well, I said, a little puzzled, trying to guess what was hidden in
the flag, that there are 7 red stripes and 6 white stripes, together
13 stripes?!
Yes, she said, but take the number 7 of the red stripes and the number 6 of the white stripes and put them next to each other, you get 76, ......the year of Independence…….1776!
Well, here you have it my good friends, a 10-year-old has just thought this old WWII history buff an amazing new chapter of the American Flag.
