Dear Friends

I have always believed in hoping for the best while preparing for the unexpected. A few months ago, I wrote to you about resilience and flexibility. At the start of this year, I was prepared to invest once more the time, energy, and conviction required to push an upcoming gallery forward. I wanted to believe in a recovering market and a path toward growth.

However, it has become increasingly clear that the global landscape offers little more than continued instability. After much reflection on how to navigate these challenges, I have realized that the conditions necessary to sustain and grow the gallery in the way I envisioned are no longer present.

I have therefore made the difficult decision to close GALERIE PHILIPPZOLLINGER.

I face this new reality with a heavy heart, but also with profound gratitude. To the artists who trusted me with their vision, and to everyone who supported the gallery, attended our exhibitions, and believed in our program: thank you. You made the dream of building this space a reality, and that is something I will always carry with me.

is excited to announce the participation of CASSIDY TONER at MANIFESTA – the European Nomadic Biennial.

Manifesta 16 Ruhr takes place from the 21st of June until the 4th of October 2026 across four cities in Germany’s Ruhr Area: Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum. Based on pre-biennial investigations and Citizen Consultations, Manifesta 16 has developed an Urban Vision for this polycentric, post-industrial and highly diverse metropolitan region.

Cassidy Toner was born 1992, in Baltimore and lives in Basel. In 2018, Toner graduated from FHNW Institute Kunst. Recent solo and duo exhibitions include at Kunstmuseum Basel (2025); PHILIPPZOLLINGER (Zurich, 2023, 2022 & 2019); All Stars (Lausanne 2023); Castiglioni (Milan, 2022); KunstRaumRiehen (2021) and Saint Luke (Zurich, 2019). In addition, she has participated in numerous group shows, such as at Kunsthalle Zurich (2023); Rinde am Rhein (Dusseldorf, 2023); Sgomento Zurigo (2023); Forde (Geneva, 2022); N/A/S/L (Mexico City, 2022); Haus Konstruktiv (Zurich, 2021); Swiss Institute (New York, 2020); Kunsthalle Basel (2019); C.Rockefeller (Dresden, 2019); Kai Matsumiya (New York, 2019); Kunsthalle Freiburg (2018) and Kunsthaus Baselland (2018). In 2018, Toner was the recipient of the Kunstkredit Award in Basel and in 2021, of the Kiefer Hablitzel Prize. This year, Cassidy Toner has been named the winner of the Manor Art Prize and Prix Mobilière.

In 1999, Renée Levi presented a groundbreaking solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel, which marked her international breakthrough and established her concept of “expanded painting.” The final room of the exhibition featured industrial plasterboards that Levi worked on directly with a spray can to challenge the rigid geometry of the space. The lines reflected her physical movement within the room, creating a tense interaction between the fleeting nature of the paint application and the weight of the material.

Last year, Levi created a site-specific intervention in the small courtyard of the Kunstmuseum Basel with the monumental mural “Mira.” The work breaks through the strict lines of the historical main building with Levi’s characteristic, energetic sweeps of color. “Mira”—a generous gift from Levi to the museum—underlines her importance as a pioneering artist at the intersection of architecture and color. Linked to this donation, the presence of her work in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Basel was anchored by the additional purchase of the two large-format paintings Yafa (2004) and Sabine (2010).

In the dialogue between Renée Levi’s painting and the work of Theo Eble, a compelling evolution in the understanding of space becomes apparent. Eble, an important representative of non-figurative art in Basel and co-founder of Gruppe 33, early on devoted himself to integrating art and architecture, notably through stained-glass windows and wall paintings from the 1950s onward. His approach to the surface within concrete art aimed at integration into the built environment. Levi takes up this dialogue half a century later, but transforms it radically. While Eble’s work often remained tied to the medium of traditional painting or permanently installed wall works, Levi physically crosses this boundary: she uses raw, industrial gypsum boards as temporary, mobile image carriers and simultaneously as space-forming elements that challenge the geometry of the exhibition space itself. In Levi’s work, space is not merely represented or integrated, but made physically tangible through installative placement and the bodily gesture of spraying, thereby replacing the static spatial concept of modernism with a dynamic form of “expanded painting.”

In collaboration with Galerie Mueller, we are pleased to welcome you to the opening of the duo exhibition by Theo Eble and Renée Levi in Basel.

In 1999, Renée Levi presented a seminal solo exhibition at the Kunsthalle Basel that manifested her characteristic synthesis of painting and architecture. This exhibition marked her international breakthrough and established her concept of “expanded painting,” in which the image becomes an installative object.

Central to the exhibition were large-scale interventions on gypsum plasterboards, a material Levi chose for its industrial character and its function as a space-defining element that challenged the rigid geometry of the exhibition site. Levi applied paint directly onto the plasterboards using spray cans. The linear gestures reflect the artist’s bodily movement through space, while the fluorescent, intense layers of color interact with the matte gray surface of the gypsum. This creates a tension between the ephemerality of the sprayed color and the weight and solidity of the construction material.

Die Arbeit „the long nap“ von Pedro Wirz reiht sich in einem Kanon von Werken ein, welcher sich mit Larven, Kokons und Eiern beschäftigen. Im Treibhaus sind acht Larven auf Stühlen scheinbar seriell platziert. Manche sind fetter als andere und eine scheint nahezu implodiert zu sein. Ruhend scheinen sie auf ihre Metamorphose zu warten. Ganz wie die sogenannten Kryoniker, welche ihre Körper, oder einzelne Organe, nach ihrem Tod in flüssigem Stickstoff einfrieren, um dann in ferner Zukunft zu einem neuen Leben erweckt zu werden. Im Larvenstadium sind viele Insekten besonders anfällig, deshalb setzen gewisse Insektizide sogenannte Häutungshemmer hier an indem sie den Prozess mit Hormonen oder mit Nervengift stören. In „the long nap“steckt ausserdem eine gehörige Prise Science-Fiction. Die kreisrunden „Augen“ der Kreaturen erinnern an Visiere von Raumanzügen. Vielleicht wäre es am einfachsten verpuppte Larven auf die Reise ins All zu senden?

Dear Friends

It was a dream come true to run a traditional gallery on Ramistrasse, arguably the best location in Switzerland. I have always focused on art that must be experienced in person, and I value a diverse exhibition program.

In November 2024, things began to change significantly; the world has become even more unstable, and an improvement does not seem to be in sight anytime soon. Galleries are always among the first to feel the change and therefore must adapt to the market. Simultaneously, we must anticipate the coming months and possibly years, as we apply for art fairs up to ten months in advance, and we need around six months to plan exhibitions at the gallery. Art is still being acquired, but on a smaller scale and less frequently. Furthermore, a generational shift seems to be taking place: My generation among other things will decide the future of the market. What can I learn from this? We need to increase resilience, act more flexibly, and pool resources with colleagues. Together for greater success!

For this reason, I have decided to close the gallery space at Ramistrasse. Although the physical gallery is temporarily ceasing operations, PHILIPPZOLLINGER will remain. Until I move to another location, I will initially switch to a nomadic program.

This change will open up new, radical, and experimental possibilities. I’m looking forward to it. Thank you for your support and see you soon.
