Monica Tap's large studio paintings celebrate both environmental ecology and the ecology of artists, past and present. 🌱

Employing a collage technique that integrates reproductions of paintings across time periods and styles to create models for her paintings, Tap's final works are rendered as constellations of voices wherein no single perspective is in charge. Juxtaposing multiple times and places, these paintings also embody Tap's critique of the perception and representation of nature as an infinite commodity.

Once, in summer invites viewers to slow down and consider the intertwined histories of art and the environment while reminding us of the restorative potential of the natural world. 🍃

There are only a couple weeks left to visit these works in person - don't miss your chance to visit us in the gallery!

While Monica Tap's larger studio paintings showcase a convergence of temporalities and viewpoints, her plein air paintings are completed on site, in a single session. 🍃

"Once, in summer" features a number of Tap's plein air sketches, arranged as a layered composite of images spanning a decade that has documented both a changing landscape and a changing artist. Tap refers to these sketches as "evidence of looking" or "containers of attention," and for her, they function as an attentional practice of presence and of being with the landscape.

Time-stamped on the back with each piece's location, date, and time of completion, these works mark Tap's experience of specific times and places, acting as artistic time capsules that emphasize duration and the role that time and perception play in painting. 🎨

We have a brand new show at our Town Office Gallery!🦋

This exhibition features a series of mixed-media collage landscapes that explore the relationship between place, memory, and imagination. Combining monoprint with magazine clippings, found papers, and reclaimed materials, Kate Greenway constructs layered scenes that range from recognizable local views to entirely imagined environments. Through the act of collecting, reusing, and reconfiguring materials, the artist reveals how landscapes—like memories—are continually shaped, reconstructed, and reinterpreted.

Kate Greenway is an award-winning Ballantrae artist who works in watercolour, mixed-media collage, and glass, drawing her inspiration from nature. Her work is held in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Stop by our Town Office Gallery at 111 Sandiford Drive to take explore these beautiful pieces!

📅Open: August 5 to November 12, 2026
📍Location: Town Office Gallery – 111 Sandiford Dr. Stouffville, ON
💙Admission is free & all are welcome

The Town Office is programmed by Latcham Art Centre in collaboration with the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

"Once, in summer" is on view now 🌟

Presenting recent paintings by Toronto-based artist Monica Tap, these large-scale, intricately constructed artworks operate both as a radiant survey of painterly marks from art history and an urgent call to preserve our natural heritage.

Using cuttings from decommissioned auction catalogues to recreate her original source images of sites near the Pickerel River, Tap creates collages that serve as models for her larger finished paintings. Tap’s collage-making intervenes in the circulation and commodification of landscape imagery and produces fragmented representations of her subjects. These paintings resonate with deep admiration for the land while acknowledging the industrialization of Canada’s natural spaces since colonialization, as she seeks to reconcile the role art has played in shaping that history. 🍃
