Varley Art Gallery The Varley Art Gallery of Markham is a vital cultural hub for artists and diverse communities. Free Admission. Varley died in 1969. Unionville.

The Varley Art Gallery of Markham features frequently changing exhibitions from the permanent collection as well as historical contemporary exhibitions drawn from local, national and international sources. New ways of seeing and appreciating art are enhanced through a broad range of dynamic hands-on art-related activities, including group tours, school programs, studio art classes, workshops and l

ectures, and family activities, designed to appeal to audiences of all ages and interests. The gallery encompasses the historic Kathleen McKay house dating from the 1840's (now the McKay Art Centre) that became the home of Frederick Horsman Varley for the last 12 years of his life. Through a generous gift by Kathleen to the Town of Markham, the Town and a group of dedicated volunteers undertook to build a 15,000 sq' gallery just doors away from the historic house on Main St. Today historic village of Unionville and the Varley Art Gallery represent the second most popular tourist attraction in York Region while serving the visual arts needs and interests for the people of Markham.

Today, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham celebrates its 29th anniversary.

Officially opened on May 31, 1997, the Gallery was established through the vision and generosity of Kathleen Gormley McKay, whose bequest helped create a permanent home for the art and legacy of F. H. Varley.

For 29 years, the Varley Art Gallery has been committed to presenting high-quality exhibitions, programs, and events that connect our community through art. We are grateful to our artists, visitors, supporters, community members, and the Varley team who continue to shape our story.

๐Ÿ‘ Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of the Varley Art Galleryโ€™s 2026 Summer Exhibitions. Despite the rainy weather, we were delighted to welcome a wonderful turnout of visitors throughout the afternoon.

From engaging conversations with artists and curator, to hands-on artmaking activities and the sound healing experience by Buddhist monk Lama Jam, the opening celebrated the many ways art can bring people together.

Our 2026 Summer Exhibitions are now officially open. Admission is free.

The artists in this exhibition work within states of inโ€‘betweenness, using painting to assemble the memories, relationships, and events that shape their identities. Through layered processes and intuitive construction, they build worlds that hold them togetherโ€”worlds offering coherence amid shifting selves and unstable histories. Together, their practices unfold within the shared context of living and working in York Region, a place shaped by cultural plurality and continual transformation.

In 2025, the Varley Art Gallery of Markham experienced transformation and growth, demonstrated resilience, and achieved record-breaking engagement.

โ€œ2025 was a stellar year for the Varley. We reached a new attendance level of 67,000 visitors, surpassing the previous high set in 2024. Since opening in 1997, the Varley has now welcomed more than 1.143 million visitors, a testament to our growing impact and continued relevance within the community.โ€โ€” Niamh Oโ€™Laoghaire, Director

Amid the Cityโ€™s Main Street Unionville Restoration Projectโ€”launched in April 2025โ€”the Varley and the McKay Art Centre remained fully accessible, with all exhibitions, programs, and events continuing as planned. At the same time, the Varley demonstrated strong fiscal stewardship, generating $524,006 in revenue.
