On November 23, 1953, a U.S. Air Force jet was scrambled from Kinross to intercept an unknown radar target over Lake Superior. Ground controllers watched the two radar blips merge... then the jet disappeared. No distress call. No confirmed wreckage. No trace of the crew. The mystery became known as the Kinross Incident.

More than 6,500 people were forced to leave their homes.
Churches, farms, schools, and businesses disappeared beneath the water.

Thousands of years ago, ancient miners extracted enormous amounts of copper from Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.
The mines are still there.
The evidence is still there.
But much of the copper itself seems to have vanished from the historical record.
Some believe it traveled across vast trade networks stretching throughout North America.

In the 1850s, James Strang crowned himself king on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan.
He built a loyal following, established his own government, and ruled the island for several years.
Some saw him as a visionary.
Others called him a dangerous cult leader.
His reign ended in gunfire, but the legend never disappeared.

According to the story, the bear tried to guide her cubs across Lake Michigan to safety.
But the swim was too far.
The cubs disappeared beneath the waves before reaching shore.
Today, many believe the islands near Sleeping Bear Dunes mark where the cubs were lost forever.
It’s one of the oldest and most powerful legends in the Great Lakes region.

More than 200 vessels were lost here after colliding with hidden reefs, sudden storms, and blinding fog on Lake Huron.
Some wrecks still sit almost perfectly preserved beneath the freezing water today.
