Ten Tons of Mercury. They Knew. They Wrote It Down.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, a chemical plant in Dryden, Ontario discharged enormous quantities of mercury into the English-Wabigoon river system.

The contamination accumulated in fish and devastated communities downstream, particularly Grassy Narrows First Nation, where fishing was central to food, culture, and the local economy.

Documents and investigations in the decades since have raised disturbing questions about what industry and government officials knew, when they knew it, and how the contamination was handled.

Mercury doesn't simply disappear when the dumping stops. Its effects can persist through an ecosystem—and through communities—for generations.

They Built a Golf Course Over a 2,000-Year-Old Moon Calendar

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the Hopewell culture constructed an enormous complex of geometric earthworks at what is now Newark, Ohio.

One of the most remarkable is the Octagon Earthworks.

Researchers found that its massive earthen walls and openings encode alignments with the Moon—including the 18.6-year lunar standstill cycle, when the Moon reaches its northernmost and southernmost rising and setting positions.

Then came an extraordinary modern twist.

In the early 1900s, a country club and golf course were established across the ancient earthworks, meaning golfers spent generations playing among monumental structures built by Indigenous people nearly two millennia earlier.

The Newark Earthworks are now part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for the extraordinary engineering, geometry and astronomical knowledge of their builders.

The Living Dune That Swallowed a Child Whole

On July 12, 2013, 6-year-old Nathan Woessner was exploring Mount Baldy at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore when the sand beneath him suddenly gave way.

He vanished.

Nathan had fallen into a hidden cavity and became trapped beneath roughly 11 feet of sand. Rescuers spent more than three hours digging before finally reaching him.

Against extraordinary odds, he survived.

The accident triggered years of scientific investigation into Mount Baldy. Researchers discovered strange cavities associated with trees that had been buried by the migrating dune. As buried organic material decays, hollow structures can temporarily remain inside the sand—creating a danger researchers hadn't expected from a seemingly solid dune.

And Mount Baldy really does move: wind continually pushes the enormous dune southward.

Then & Now Tuesday — Toledo Harbor Lighthouse 🌊🕰️

THEN vs. NOW: More than a century guarding the entrance to Toledo.

The Toledo Harbor Lighthouse first shined its light in 1904, standing several miles offshore where the Toledo shipping channel meets western Lake Erie.

THEN: Keepers actually lived inside this isolated lighthouse, maintaining the light and helping guide ships toward one of the Great Lakes' busiest industrial ports.

NOW: The lighthouse is automated and still stands offshore—surrounded by water, weather, and more than 120 years of Great Lakes history.

It has watched generations of freighters, sailors, storms, and changing Toledo skylines pass by.

Ancient Life Hiding Below Lake Huron Will Shock You

Beneath Lake Huron near Alpena, Michigan, underwater sinkholes contain one of the strangest ecosystems in the Great Lakes.

Sulfur-rich groundwater seeps through the lakebed, creating cold, low-oxygen conditions where purple cyanobacterial mats and other microbes thrive. NOAA scientists say these sinkholes can serve as a window into conditions resembling Earth approximately 2.5 billion years ago.

The sinkholes were discovered during research connected to Lake Huron's famous shipwrecks. Scientists have studied them because these microbial communities may help us understand early Earth, the rise of oxygen, and even what life could look like in extreme environments elsewhere.

Mystery Monday — Le Griffon 🌊⚓

In 1679, Le Griffon sailed into Great Lakes history—and then vanished.

The ship left Green Bay loaded with furs and headed east with a small crew. It never reached its destination.

No confirmed wreck. No definitive explanation.

For more than 340 years, explorers and researchers have searched for Le Griffon, with numerous discoveries claimed to be the legendary ship—but none universally accepted.

So what happened?

They Killed 50,000 Birds a Day Near Petoskey. Then Silence Forever.

In 1878, an immense passenger-pigeon nesting formed near Petoskey, Michigan, stretching roughly 40 miles through northern Michigan. Professional hunters descended on it.

The Smithsonian reports that approximately 50,000 pigeons were killed every day for nearly five months. Birds were shot and netted while others were captured alive and shipped away for trapshooting.

It was one of the last great gatherings of a species that had once existed in numbers almost impossible to comprehend.

The decline continued until only captive birds remained. In 1914, the last known passenger pigeon died—and a species whose flocks once darkened North American skies was gone forever.

The Island in the Detroit River That Never Let Anyone Through

Before Boblo Island became an amusement destination, Bois Blanc Island occupied one of the most strategically important positions on the Detroit River.

Sitting opposite Amherstburg and Fort Malden, the island was recognized by the British as a defensive point along the river. During the 1837–38 rebellions, militia occupied the island, and rebels and their American supporters briefly seized it in January 1838.

The British responded by constructing three blockhouses in 1839, occupied by British troops until 1858. Together with nearby Fort Malden, they helped protect this critical stretch of the Detroit frontier.

Long before the roller coasters, ferries and crowds, Boblo was part of a military defense system.

THE GREAT LAKES ONCE FACED A “WHITE HURRICANE.” 🌊❄️
November 1913.
A monstrous storm slammed the Great Lakes with hurricane-force wind gusts, blinding snow and waves estimated around 35 feet high.
Ships were caught with nowhere to hide.
Twelve major vessels sank. Roughly 250 sailors lost their lives. Lake Huron took the worst of it, with eight large ships going down during the storm. �

More than a century later, some of those ships still rest beneath the lakes—including the Isaac M. Scott, upside down in roughly 180 feet of Lake Huron. �
