The Toronto Railway Museum works closely with Canadian artists to offer high-quality Canadian-made products, thoughtfully curated for our gift shop collection.

Natalie Greb is a Canadian artist currently based in Calgary who has created a series of stickers, magnets, and postcards inspired by our steam locomotive 6213 and TH&B Caboose 70. To capture a sense of realism, she focused closely on each train's unique features, resulting in carefully crafted and detailed artwork. Available now at the gift shop! We're open daily during the summer season from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Come visit our cozy space!

This month’s feature is an impressive uniform from our textiles collection. Our feature is a heavy wool Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) overcoat. The dark blue full-length jacket measures 105cm long and it remains in excellent condition. Made in August 1954, the coat is complete with eight double-breasted silver buttons, two on each cuff, two on its martingale belt, and one on each epaulette. All the original Canadian-made buttons are detailed with “CANADIAN PACIFIC” text and its iconic wood-munching beaver.

Inspired by military greatcoats which originated in the nineteenth century, heavy wool overcoats like ours were tailormade for rail conductors and engineers. CPR’s operations staff, who were exposed to harsh Canadian winters, required heavy coats to keep warm during their long shifts. CPR overcoats, like greatcoats, were made for maximum warmth, durability, and style.

Our coat was tailored by Samuel M. Ogulnik & Co. LTD of Montreal, a popular tailor and uniform maker of the time, but the business dissolved in December 1978. The size 40 coat belonged to an H. Harris of the CPR (employee number A1086), who took excellent care of his garment.
