This weekend, we are launching a brand-new exhibit in the Queen Elizabeth II Art Gallery! ✨

🖼️ “Whispers of the Quiet Wide”
presented by artists Cindy Hoppe and Diane Larouche Ellard.

This exhibit brings together the work of Saskatchewan artists Diane Larouche Ellard and Cindy Hoppe in a collaborative exhibition that explores the enduring beauty, spirit and stories of prairie life. 💙

🎨 Rooted in the vast landscapes of the Canadian Prairies, the exhibition uses fibre, mixed media and encaustic works to create a sensory experience of the land’s quiet but powerful presence.

📅 The exhibit begins Saturday, June 27.

Today, we honour National Indigenous Peoples Day with a spotlight on the Saskatchewan Residential School Memorial located at Government House. 💙

Dedicated in 2022 by former Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan the Honourable Russ Mirasty, this memorial honours the survivors of Canada's residential school system and all others who have been impacted by the experiences at residential schools, including the children who did not return home.

✨ You can visit the memorial at any time, in the Edwardian Gardens outside Government House.

✨ Get a guided tour of our beautifully restored museum, which resembles Government House during the tenure of the first Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Amédée Forget.

🏠 Learn about the rich history that echoes throughout the halls of Government House, from the hijinks of Jocko the Monkey to the lifestyle of the Lieutenant Governor in 1905.

👀 View preserved artifacts from the Edwardian and Victorian eras on display.

🌷 And of course, enjoy the Edwardian Gardens (you can view at any time!).

Now is the perfect time to visit, with tours available at the top of the hour. You can pre-book online at www.governmenthousesk.ca for a group of 10 or more people.

Government House has worn a few different looks throughout its 135 years. 🎩

In preparation of our event, A Garden Party Through Time, taking place on August 15 where guests will dive into the different eras of Government House, we will revisit the museum’s many appearances over the years.

✨ Today, we are looking at the 1891-1945 era of Government House, when the Lieutenant Governor of Northwest Territories, and then Saskatchewan, resided in the House.

🏠 Its architectural design was in fact a composite of several different styles popular during the late-Victorian period. It was built on a grand scale based on the federal government’s desire to have an imposing symbol of its authority in the Northwest Territories. Residences like Government House, which housed the representative of Her Majesty the Queen, should be built to represent the grandeur of the British Empire. Canadian imperialists felt that the Northwest Territories was to deliver the British Empire into the twentieth century.

🤯 At its completion in 1891, Government House was by far the most advanced dwelling in the Northwest Territories.

Congratulations to all of the students who bravely presented their projects to the judges and the public during Heritage Saskatchewan’s Provincial Heritage Fair this year, held at Government House. 🎉

The research, time, effort and creativity of each of the students was shown through some truly amazing projects. Bravo! 👏
