World War II saw the entire community mobilize. Following the August 1940 Peterborough Industrial Exhibition, the city fairgrounds were immediately converted into a military training ground. On the home front, major manufacturing hubs like Canadian General Electric (CGE) shifted entirely to military contracts, prompting massive population growth and the rapid construction of 500 "war-time houses". Overseas, soldiers tied to Peterborough’s heritage fought with the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, famously distinguishing themselves during the brutal, house-to-house urban warfare at the Battle of Ortona in Italy (1943).

The Battle Honours of World War I (1914–1918).
During the Great War, Peterborough raised vital components for overseas service, including the 93rd Battalion, CEF. Peterborough’s soldiers fought on some of the bloodiest frontlines of the Western Front. In 1929, the local regiment was officially awarded a prestigious list of Battle Honours, including legendary victories at Ypres, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, and the Hindenburg Line.

Construction of the Peterborough Drill Hall / Armoury (1907–1909)Following the South African War, the Canadian government enacted massive defensive reforms. This initiative resulted in the construction of the Peterborough Armoury between 1907 and 1909. Designed by famed architect Thomas Fuller to resemble a Romanesque fortress, it remains one of the largest and best-designed Class-B drill halls in the country. Historically serving as the training grounds for local WWI battalions, it today stands as a National Historic Site and serves as the home base for the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment (Hasty P&Rs).

The Formation of the Peterborough Rangers (1857–1936)The 57th Regiment, Peterborough Rangers, officially established itself as the cornerstone of local military pride. They saw action in the North-West Rebellion and trained a steady supply of troops who deployed during the South African (Boer) War. In 1936, the Rangers amalgamated with the 3rd Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons to become the Prince of Wales Rangers (Peterborough Regiment), keeping the region's infantry lineage intact before eventually restructuring into artillery units post-WWII.
