Last month at our Annual General Meeting, we had the privilege of welcoming a new director to The Canadian Canoe Museum’s Board of Directors: Dr. Mike DeGagné

Dr. Mike DeGagné was most recently the President & CEO of Indspire, an Indigenous national charity which supports and invests in the education of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people across Turtle Island.

He was appointed Nipissing University President and Vice Chancellor in 2013, becoming the first Indigenous president of a Canadian public university. He later served as the first President of Yukon University, a new hybrid post-secondary institution in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is currently Professor of Sociology at University of Toronto Scarborough and is conducting community engagement on the development of an Indian Hospitals Foundation.

In 1998, Dr. DeGagné became the founding Executive Director of the Aboriginal Healing Foundation, a national Indigenous organization dedicated to addressing the legacy of Canada’s Indian Residential School System.

He holds a PhD from Michigan State University, focussing on Indigenous post-secondary success, and Masters degrees in Administration, Law, and Public Ethics. He has co-edited and co-authored several publications in Canada and Australia on reconciliation and healing, including the “Speaking My Truth” series.

He serves on numerous boards of directors including The Global Centre for Pluralism, and is co-Chair of the National Council on Reconciliation. He is a recipient of the Order of Canada, and the Order of Ontario.

Dr. DeGagné is a member of the Animakee Wa Zhing #37 First Nation.

Aaaniin, welcome, bienvenue Dr. Mike DeGagné! We look forward to working together as we continue connecting people to the land, water, and one another.

Piecing it Together: The Oldest Canoe in the Collection

Around 250 years old, this 20-foot birch bark canoe is one of the oldest of its kind in the world. It now rests in the Museum’s care.

The diary of Lieutenant John Enys has helped piece together parts of its journey, though its origins remain largely unknown. Its fragile condition reveals distinct construction techniques still used by birch bark canoe builders today.

How do you piece together a canoe when so much of its past is missing?

Our canoe paddle carving workshops have become some of the Museum’s most popular hands-on experiences, and this June we are excited to host our first Greenland-style KAYAK paddle carving workshop.

Over two days, instructor Jenni Hunter of Spirit Tree Paddle Company will guide participants through the process of shaping their own Greenland-style paddle by hand, from rough carving to final sanding and finishing. Participants will leave with a functional, customized paddle ready to take out on the water.

"Our paddle-making workshops are about more than wood and tools. They’re about stories shared, skills passed on, and the simple joy of shaping something real with your hands. From the first strokes of a spokeshave to the final smoothing and sanding, you’ll be guided every step of the way."

Greenland-Paddle Carving Workshop
🗓️ Date: Thursday & Friday, June 11-12, 2026
🕘 Time: 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
🎟 Price: $410 | Members save 10%
