It’s Ada Lovelace day! In an 1843 paper, Ada wrote what is considered to be the first computer program. 💻

Today, we’re sharing her Women in STEM poster, and highlighting a special artefact in our collection with a connection to Ada.✨

Swipe to see the artefact, a replica of Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine No. 1 from 1832, one of the earliest automatic calculators.🟰 In the 1840s, Babbage designed a more advanced, programmable Analytical Engine.

Ada Lovelace recognized the wider potential of this machine, which led to her 1843 publication.📝 She saw that a machine created to follow instructions and crunch numbers might also process symbols, music, and other kinds of information.ℹ️

Together, the Babbage machines connect the history of mathematics and computing, the ingenuity of the Industrial Revolution, and Lovelace’s vision of what computing might become.🌟

Did you know? Defibrillators can’t start a completely stopped heart.🫀

There needs to be an electrical signal in the heart for a defibrillator to work.⚡️ When someone flatlines, their heart doesn’t have any electrical signals.

Defibrillators are designed to correct certain abnormal heart rhythms by interrupting the heart’s electrical signals, so the heart can get back to normal.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours survivors of residential schools and their peers who never returned home, as well as their families and communities.

The day also provides us with an opportunity to learn about elements of First Nations, Métis and Inuit culture which are being reclaimed.

Ingenium museums are offering free admission to all visitors today. Indigenous visitors are offered free admission all year-round.

Sacred Journey has been at our museum for a little over three months now. We have been honored to share this exhibition with you.

Sacred Journey was developed by the Heiltsuk nation. It shares the story of the resurgence Indigenous ocean-going canoe on the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. 🛶

This resurgence is a powerful movement. Tribal Canoe Journeys connect Indigenous Peoples across the coast, where they share stories, cultures, song and dance.

These journeys are place of strength, where Indigenous people to connect with themselves and their cultures after years of colonization. A place where they can heal, thanks to the work of their own communities.
