The largest public gallery in Durham region, the RMG occupies an inspired 36,000 square foot building designed by world-renowned architect Arthur Erickson. Featuring a Permanent Collection of over 4000 works of art, four galleries of diverse & changing exhibitions, vibrant programmes, Arthur’s on the 4th, gallery shop, library, and two art & education studios, the RMG is located in downtown Oshawa

Austin Henderson: Talking to Papou is now on view!

Talking to Papou is an exhibition of paintings, lithographs, and multimedia works by Austin Henderson inspired by his Greek Canadian grandfather, or “papou.” An avid traveller, gardener, volunteer, and lifetime resident of Oshawa, Henderson’s grandfather passed away in 1988 from AIDS-related complications, nearly a decade before Henderson was born. Over the years, it was difficult for Henderson’s family to talk openly about his grandfather’s death because of the grief and social stigma that surrounded it; Henderson himself only learned about the cause of his grandfather’s brief illness when he came out to his parents as a young adult. The works in this exhibition are an effort by the artist to get to know his grandfather through the photos, journals, and legacy he left behind. On view now until August 9, 2026.

Stephen Andrews: The sum of the parts is now on view.

The sum of the parts brings together a constellation of works by Stephen Andrews that examine how systems of war, resource extraction, and global capital are permitted through complacency and constructed through incremental, often hidden acts.

At the centre of the exhibition is The Robert McLaughlin Gallery’s recent acquisition of Cartoon (2007), a landmark work comprised of 125 drawings on mylar that together form the stills of a single-channel video animation. Suspended between object and image, stillness and motion, the work foregrounds the mechanics of its own making. Meticulously translating found footage frame by frame through a labour-intensive drawing process, Andrews mimics the dot matrix of four-colour reproduction, softening scenes of violence into a disquieting pastel register. On view until November 1, 2026.

In this interview, RBC Emerging Artist in Residence, Austin Henderson, shares details about his upcoming solo exhibition "Talking to Papou," which opens this Saturday, June 13 from 1-4pm.

An exhibition of paintings, lithographs, and multimedia works by Henderson inspired by his Greek Canadian grandfather, or “papou,” Henderson cultivates a special connection with his grandfather by transforming materials from both private and public archives into works of art. "Those photos let me see my grandfather not just as my Papou and as someone who raised my mother but it let me see him as a peer."

Oliver Husain: I ♥ Snail is now on view.

I ♥ Snail is an immersive video installation by Oliver Husain that examines IMAX cinema as both an experimental film format emerging in the 1960s and a technology later mobilized as a tool of nation-building. The exhibition title is drawn from a sticker found in the archived papers of Toronto-based filmmaker Graeme Ferguson, one of the inventors of IMAX cinema.

Conceived at Montreal’s Expo 67, and first realized at Expo Osaka (1970), IMAX was developed from the experimental film and expanded cinema movements into a global exhibition standard. The elaborate early theatres were significant architectural landmarks, operating as both national expos and theme parks, while serving as highly visible sites of cultural ambition and technological spectacle. Please join us in welcoming Lana Yuan to the RBC Emerging Artist Residency Program!

During her residency, Lana Yuan will develop a new sculptural project that examines how loneliness, routine, and displacement are inscribed onto the body through the patterned behaviours of urban life.

Working across digital fabrication techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting, alongside hand assembly and lathe work, she will construct installations that oscillate between rigidity and softness, conveying the tension she has observed in urban environments between emotional distance and physical closeness. Drawing material inspiration from Oshawa’s industrial history and social rhythms, she will salvage and repurpose found objects into sculptural forms. This new work will explore the unintentional connections we form with each other through repetition and proximity overtime.
