The largest public gallery in Durham region, the RMG occupies an inspired 36,000 square foot building designed by world-renowned architect Arthur Erickson. Featuring a Permanent Collection of over 4000 works of art, four galleries of diverse & changing exhibitions, vibrant programmes, Arthur’s on the 4th, gallery shop, library, and two art & education studios, the RMG is located in downtown Oshawa

Take inspiration from the central character in the exhibition Oliver Husain: I ♥ Snail, the golden apple snail. Let’s sculpt our own small snail character with plasticine and then create a cozy collaged triorama habitat for our snail to reside in.

Join us for a virtual presentation with interdisciplinary artist Lana Yuan.

Yuan will share how she is building her art career with the support of Makerspaces, expanding on her traditional studio practice with the tools they provide. Using examples from her own work, Lana will explain how 3D printers, CNC routers, laser cutters, and sewing machines have become a part of her creative process. This presentation will include demonstrations and reflections, exploring how technology can expand, not replace, creative thinking.

Join us for a weekend art adventure full of vibrant colours and inspired creativity.

Saturday studio is an art class for ages 5 to 7 and 8 to 12 to explore art-making materials and techniques. Each student is encouraged to express themselves through art, make mess, and create unique masterpieces. Our experienced art instructor will guide students through a variety of art projects, allowing them to make choices in their art and play with new or familiar materials. Class starts October 3, 2026.

Consider cause and consequence in Stephen Andrews: The sum of the parts.

The sum of the parts emerges from Andrews’ sustained engagement with media coverage of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars and extends this inquiry into the infrastructures that sustain violence—global oil production, militarized economies, and consumer complicity embedded in daily life. Attentive to the ways images circulate and accrue meaning, the work examines how these representations mediate our understanding of global events.

The RMG Youth Arts Action Council has been hard at work this summer!

The RMG Youth Arts Action Council (YAAC), founded this summer, is a group of passionate high school students who are dedicated towards making a meaningful impact at The Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and encourage other youth to become more engaged with the arts. Through voluntary hands-on experience at the RMG, they aim to inspire creativity, strengthen the community, and make lasting impacts.

The YAAC will be returning to the gallery this fall, and will be seeking new members to help further support the council. Stay tuned for more details!

A new community exhibition is on view now!

The Seniors Art Competition and Exhibition, "That Summer" is a showcase of creativity and technical skill among members of the Oshawa Senior Community Centres, Oshawa Public Libraries, and The Robert McLaughlin Gallery.

Featuring paintings, drawings, sculpture, and more, this annual community exhibition is structured around a competition theme. Prizes are awarded in three categories: Novice, Hobby, and Open.

Curious about IMAX cinema history?

Oliver Husain: I ♥ Snail is an immersive video installation by Oliver Husain that examines IMAX cinema as both an experimental film format emerging in the 1960s and a technology later mobilized as a tool of nation-building.

Conceived at Montreal’s Expo 67, and first realized at Expo Osaka (1970), IMAX was developed from the experimental film and expanded cinema movements into a global exhibition standard. The elaborate early theatres were significant architectural landmarks, operating as both national expos and theme parks, while serving as highly visible sites of cultural ambition and technological spectacle.

The installation contains a Super 8 film shot over three years at early IMAX sites including Ontario Place in Toronto, La Géode in Paris, Futuroscope in Poitiers, and La Bola in Tijuana. In a deliberate reversal of scale, this film about the largest analogue format ever produced was shot on Super 8, the smallest available gauge, foregrounding the paradoxes embedded in IMAX’s technological scale and utopian ambition.
