Quartermain Earth Science Centre

Quartermain Earth Science Centre The Quartermain Earth Science Centre is a museum showcasing the beauty and excitement of geoscience! The museum was officially opened in June, 2011.

The Quartermain Centre highlights the beauty and excitement of geology in the form of exhibits, displays, programs and events. The Quartermain Centre provides visitors with a geological journey through the planets interior, seismicity, volcanism, structure, economics and evolution of fossilized plants and animals. The University of New Brunswick in Fredericton is home to the Quartermain Earth Scie

nce Centre thanks to a $1-million contribution by UNB alumnus and mining executive, Bob Quartermain. Located in UNB’s forestry and geology building, the centre includes dinosaur replicas, a large-scale display showing a journey to the centre of the earth, a working seismograph and a mineral showcase. It also houses a new teaching and computer lab and will serve as a repository for items and information important to New Brunswick and Fredericton geology. The centre, which is the only one of its kind in the province, would not have been possible without the generous support of Dr. Quartermain, whom the space is named after. A native of St. Stephen, Dr. Quartermain graduated in 1977 from the University of New Brunswick with a bachelor of science degree in geology. In 1981, he graduated from Queen’s University with a master of science degree in mineral exploration.

πŸŽ‰ Please join us in welcoming Liam Girard to the Quartermain Earth Science Centre team! πŸŽ‰

We are excited to have Liam join the QESC as our new Curatorial Assistant. Liam brings a strong background in museum collections, archives, exhibits, and science outreach.

"My name is Liam Girard. I recently graduated from the Fleming College Museum Management and Curatorship program. Previously, I was the Collection Management Intern at The Rooms where I assisted in cataloguing their philately collection and worked on the exhibit 'From β€˜77 to ’25: A Journey Through Newfoundland and Labrador’s Canada Games.'
I was a Private Sector Archivist Intern at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. There I helped organize the records as well as repair documents from over 150 years ago.
I have also worked for Science North on their outreach team as well as the Peterborough County Military Museum as a temporary board member and outreach supervisor.
In my spare time I like to think up fantasy worlds for Dungeons and Dragons or launch satellites into space in Kerbal Space Program.
I am very excited to join the team!"

Welcome to the QESC, Liam! We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead. πŸŒπŸ¦–πŸͺ¨

β˜„οΈπŸŒŽ Meteorites, Impact Craters, and Curiosity

Action at the Quartermain Earth Science Centre last Saturday! The QESC was pleased to participate in the recent UNB Science with support from CISE Atlantic, UNB Computer Science, UNB Offices of the Provost and President with programming from Worlds UNBound, ACAP Saint John, Conservation Council of NB, Science East, Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Assoc and all kinds of fabulous folks on campus! UNB Science. UNB Science brought together hundreds of Girl Guides from across the region for a day of exploration and learning in STEM disciplines.

At the museum, girl guides explored the exciting world of meteorites through our Meteorite Impact activity, discovering how rocks from space create impact craters and what meteorites can teach us about our Solar System. These young scientists tested their hypotheses by creating their own impact craters and investigating how meteor size and speed influence crater formation.

A special thank you to our new Curatorial Assistant Liam Girard and Julianna Piques-Viana, (Julianna is a UNB Earth Sciences student completing her honours thesis in Planetary Geology with Dr. John Spray, Director of the Planetary and Space Science Centre (PASSC)), for sharing their enthusiasm and expertise with the next generation of scientists!

Thank you to ESCI Digital Marketing Assistant, Olivany Phan, for the amazing photographs! Also thank you to AARMS, the organizers, volunteers, and all the young STEM explorers! We loved meeting you! πŸš€βœ¨

What an incredible time celebrating New Brunswick Mining Week!πŸ”¨πŸ”¨
🀩From discovering the latest in mineral and sustainable practices to celebrating the rich geological resources of our province, to showcase how local geological resources drive sustainable practices. More importantly, it gave our students and researchers a meaningful space to connect, share knowledge, and build lasting relationships with the local industry.
πŸ™ŒA huge thank you to the organizers, industry partners, and the many professionals and our amazing volunteers who shared their expertise and enthusiasm with us this past week. Your support and insight help make these events an unforgettable experience for the next generation of geoscientists!
😊 Check out some of the great moments captured at the event below!

🧐 CAN YOUR TOWN SURVIVE A LANDSLIDE ? πŸͺ¨

🀩We had a fantastic time hosting the Grade 8 students from Hartland Community School at the Quartermain Earth Science Centre to find out! 🌍✨

πŸ‘©β€πŸ« During their visit, the students got hands-on with Earth science by learning all about natural hazards like landslides and rockfalls. Working in teams, they became Geological engineers for the day, designing and building mitigation structures to protect their miniature Lego communities.

πŸŽ‰ It was incredible to see their teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving in action!!

Great job EVERYONE and thank you for visiting us! πŸ‘
