(1)

The Fredericton Region Museum (formerly the York Sunbury Museum) is operated by the York Sunbury Historical Society. The Society was founded in 1932 and has members from all over North America. In 1959, the Museum found permanent headquarters in the Officers' Quarters (571 Queen Street) in the heart of downtown Fredericton's Historic Garrison district. The Society and Museum remain a non-profit en

terprise with a small paid staff and numerous volunteers. They work tirelessly to create informative exhibits based on the history of Fredericton and surrounding areas, organize programs and events as well as publish a local history periodical The Officers' Quarters. The Fredericton Region Museum is the home of the world famous Coleman Frog and has 12 permanent and temporary exhibits including First Nations, Acadian, Loyalist, Black Heritage, First World War, Second World War (Carleton and York Regiment). The Fredericton Region Museum is a gateway into the exciting history and diverse heritage of central New Brunswick. Because central New Brunswick is where the provincial capital is located, and it served as a meeting place for First Nations, Loyalists, Acadian, and other European settlers, the Fredericton Region Museum is an excellent place to start. With over 4,000 square feet of exhibit space and a collection of over 30,000 artefacts and archival documents, the museum is a fun and exciting way to look into our past.

On May 5th, a Memory Walk for Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) will be held in Fredericton.

We invite community members, families, and allies to join us as we honour the lives lost, support one another, and raise awareness for ongoing justice and healing.

The walk will begin at Carleton Park (North Side) at 10:30 AM and end at Officer’s Square (Southside). A map of the route is included in this post.

At 11:30 AM at Officer’s Square, there will be speakers, drummers, dancers, food, refreshments, and time to gather in community.

At 1:30 PM, a short film, They Remain by Wabanaki Media, will be shown at Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

All are welcome. We encourage everyone to walk with us in remembrance and solidarity.

The Fredericton Region Museum was recently donated this beautiful Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers’ Decoration - awarded to Colonel Harry Fulton McLeod, a distinguished Fredericton lawyer, soldier, and public servant. Col McLeod commanded the 71st Battalion of the Canadian Militia and later the 12th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He also served as Mayor of Fredericton and as a Member of Parliament.

At the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, Col McLeod sailed to England with Canada’s First Contingent, and later saw duty in France. This medal reflects both his long military service as well as his contribution to Canada’s war effort. The Royal New Brunswick Regiment perpetuates the legacy of the 71st and 12th Battalions with which he served.

Thank you to Mark Lukin of Margaretville, New York, who tracked us down to ensure that Col McLeod's medal would find its way back home! You'll find his treasure on display in our First World War Trench. We're open Wednesday - Saturday 1pm to 4pm!
