Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site Dig up something different in Drumheller! The Atlas Coal Mine was the last of 139 mines that operated in the Drumheller Valley from 1911 to 1979.

We're open 10am-5pm, 7 days/week. Book your tickets online up to two weeks in advance! Can't get to site, but want to support us? Please check out the Red House Gift Shop online (shop.atlascoalmine.ab.ca). Every purchase helps us preserve Alberta's coal mining history!

How did miners light their way underground before electric lamps became common?

Calcium carbide lamps were widely used by miners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They produced light when water reacted with calcium carbide to create flammable acetylene gas.

Join Bob Moffatt at Atlas Coal Mine as he tests one of these historic lamps and brings a piece of mining history to life!

That’s a wrap on our Summer 2026 season!

A huge thank you to everyone who visited Atlas Coal Mine this summer! From riding the historic mine train to exploring the site and sharing stories with families whose histories are rooted in coal mining, it was wonderful welcoming both familiar and new faces.

Thank you to our visitors, staff, and supporters for making this season so memorable and helping keep Atlas’s history alive.

Christmas in the Coulee is back for its 8th year, and we’re looking for volunteers to help make this holiday tradition special!

Join us in giving back to our community, connecting with others, and spreading Christmas cheer. Volunteers will also enjoy a free meal at the East Coulee School Museum!
