Every time I walk into the doors at The Potters Place in Courtenay I am amazed and honoured to be amongst such talented potters and incredible human beings. It is such a treasure in the Comox Valley. I have been shopping here since 1995 and a member since 2018 (I think). There are still two original members who had a vision 34 years ago and their legacy lives on. I love this shop with its big windows and creaky fir floors and plethora of potters. Today, as I take my turn running the store, I am full of gratitude that this is a big part of my life.
I’ve done a little re-stock and have the doors open. Pop by if you’re downtown.

If you’re looking for some of my work, but aren’t able to get into Courtenay, I’ve done a re-stock at and at in time for the weekend. Both of these little gift shops make my heart sing. Both are run by amazing business women. I’m proud to have work in these spots.

Sometimes an artist holds a piece back. Will I keep it? Will I gift it? Will I sell it? I just don’t know, but it’s a special piece. I will bring it to Kitty Coleman on Monday because I’ve decided to sell it. I can’t believe I sold out of 27 fruit fly traps!! But here’s one more.

The dignity mugs available this weekend are all similar to this one. They have a wide, flat handle, which I understand is easier to grip for arthritic hands. The handle accommodates a hand going through, not just fingers. There is a squish, for your opposite hand to grip for added support. It also has the little prop opposite the handle to use to help steady the mug as it’s being picked up, or set down. The first time I sold these publicly, I had a man with familial tremors in my booth (my dad also had this). The relief and joy I saw on his face, when I directed him towards the dignity mugs, brought me to tears. He picked up the mug, shaking, put his opposite hand on the prop and everything steadied.

Faaaaak!!! Fak and double fak!!! A peek behind the scenes today. It’s not all fun and games in the studio. I stood on a bucket to reach something (something I’ve done dozens of times) and today was the day the old, brittle plastic lid gave way. What a f@(%ing mess! But sure glad there was no red iron oxide in that glaze, or it would have made a scene out of Dexter look like child’s play. Landed hard on my knee on the cement floor. Then, noticed a butter dish that I set out of the way and forgot about. It did not make it into the kiln. 🤷‍♀️ and, of course, I’m feeling behind the 8 ball. And BREATHE

Back to old glaze combos, but with my hand carving in the clay surface now. I’m loving the depth and variation of the glaze. I think I’ll be following this tangent for a while. It will be unveiled at this long weekend. I hope to see you there 😊
