Kwakwaka´wakw artist Tom D. Hunt stands here holding his Whale Hunter Mask. It is hand-carved from red cedar, painted in acrylic, and finished with horsehair.

A widely held narrative recounts an Indigenous hunter who, lost to the vastness of the sea during a whale hunt, does not succumb to the elements as one might expect. Instead, he is carried beyond the mortal realm into the Spirit World, where he undergoes a profound and otherworldly transformation.

In this liminal space between worlds, he is reshaped - his identity merging with that of the orca, or dissolving into the spiritual domain itself - emerging not as one lost, but as one forever changed, existing in unity with the powerful forces that govern both sea and spirit.

It is richly adorned with black, green, and red acrylic and further enhanced with cedar bark, a prominent crystal, vibrant orange glass beads, and dentalium shell, each element contributing to its powerful presence.

Accompanying the work, James shares a compelling narrative rooted in tradition - telling of ’Namxxiyalegiyu, a vast and formidable supernatural halibut being, whose name is often translated as “the fearsome one,” evoking both awe and reverence.
