As part of our satellite exhibition "𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭," we are pleased to feature the work of artist 𝐑𝐨𝐝 𝐒𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐡!

Rod Smith’s finely detailed sculptures and paintings reflect the continuation of Northwest Coast artistic traditions through the skills, knowledge, and cultural teachings passed down through generations. Rod trained with his father, Harris Smith, who trained with his grandfather, Lalkawilas.

This striking Human Transformation Mask is hand-carved by Nuu-chah-nulth carver Sanford Williams.

Known for his detailed carvings, Williams has developed a distinctive style while remaining grounded in the forms and design traditions of his culture. This mask is a beautiful example of Williams’ carving, with carefully rendered features and a sense of movement and character that draws the viewer into the work.

The exhibition brings together a selection of hand-carved masks, paddles, panels, sculptures, paintings, and limited-edition prints by Northwest Coast Indigenous Artists.

These works reflect the continuity of Northwest Coast Indigenous art as a living tradition - carrying forward generations of knowledge, stories, teachings, and creative practices while continuing to evolve through contemporary artists.

The gallery will be closed today, September 30, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Truth and reconciliation call on us to listen, learn, remember, and reflect—not only today, but throughout the year.

September 30 is an opportunity to remember the Survivors of residential schools, their families, and the generations whose lives continue to be affected by this history. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength, resilience, and enduring presence of Indigenous cultures, languages, traditions, and communities.

As a gallery, we are grateful for the opportunity to share the work and voices of Indigenous artists from across the Northwest Coast. Art can be a powerful way to learn, connect with culture and history, and create space for Indigenous voices and stories.

We encourage everyone to take some time to listen and learn, in whatever way is meaningful to you.

This Raven argillite plaque, masterfully hand-carved by Haida artist Jack Pollard, is framed by a richly embellished border that enhances its striking presence. Acquired from a private collection, the piece has been well preserved and remains in excellent condition.

Mischievous and endlessly curious, the Raven holds a central and revered place in Pacific Northwest Coast culture.

Kwakwaka'wakw artist Trevor Hunt holds this striking Salmon Panel, sandblasted in yellow Cedar and painted in vibrant acrylics.

The Salmon serve as strong symbols of abundance, fertility and renewal. For thousands of years, Salmon have been a bountiful food source for Northwest Coast Native Americans and are highly revered.

Family ties and a strong community

This stunning Double Killer Whale or Orca Panel is hand-carved in red cedar by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Morris Johnny. It features a small and large Orca swimming together in unity.

The Orca or Killer Whale symbolizes family, harmony, travel, community and protection. Orcas will often stay their whole life with the same pod and raise each calf with care.

Talented Kwakwaka'wakw artist Gilbert Dawson is pictured here with his beautifully hand-carved Frog Mask. This truly remarkable piece holds a special surprise: when the mask is turned in the opposite direction from how it is shown in the image, a baby frog is revealed within the design.

A new spyhop sculpture has arrived by talented Kwakwaka'wakw artist Rod Smith. Beautifully painted as always, with strong fluid lines. There have been many special Orca sightings recently around Vancouver Island, with pods putting on a show for lucky viewers.

The Orca or Killer Whale has strong family ties; they are part of a large community, travelling together and forming everlasting bonds.

This is a special piece for anyone looking to be reminded of unity and togetherness.
