In this body of work, Vancouver-based artist Sandeep Johal explores the resilience of women through painting, collage, textiles, and mural in her signature Indo-folk aesthetic. Johal’s work articulates and confronts harsh and ugly realities with their dissonant opposites: brightness, hope and beauty.

Using guided prompts and the vibrant colours, patterns, and motifs inspired by Sandeep Johal’s Indo-folk visual language, participants will create their own imaginative hybrid creatures through collage. ✂️⁠

Participants must be 8 years of age or older, with partitioners under 14 requiring a parent or guardian in attendance. Space is limited and offered on a first come first serve basis!

🌀 This playful, hands-on workshop encourages creativity and experimentation, with no prior experience needed—just bring your curiosity. ⁠

About Sandeep Johal:⁠
⁠
Sandeep Johal is a Vancouver-based Canadian visual artist, advocate, and leader whose practice engages drawing, collage, textiles, and large-scale murals. Through her Indo-folk feminine aesthetic, she confronts themes of bleakness, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness, hope and beauty.⁠

Johal’s work typically centers around the stories of women and while she highlights female suffering in its many forms, these are ultimately stories of resistance and resilience.⁠

Johal began her professional art practice after becoming a new mother at the age of 41. Since then, she has worked on a number of notable site-specific commissions with the Vancouver Art Gallery (2021, 2019), Burrard Arts Foundation (2019) and Vancouver Mural Festival (2016-2021).⁠

Johal’s work is held in numerous collections, including the TD Art Collection, the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art, Global Affairs Canada Visual Art Collection Program (Canadian Embassy, San Salvador), and Surrey Art Gallery.⁠

Inspired by a grand Victorian painting of an Alpine waterway commissioned by an eccentric German baron for his Nova Scotia mansion, this exhibition presents the work of contemporary East Coast artists grappling with the contradictory aesthetic inheritances of Romanticism and colonialism.

Artists include Alfred Schoeck, D’Arcy Wilson, Doug Dumais, Gustav Amberger, Janice Wright Cheney, John Greer, and Ryan Josey, among others. Curated by Pan Wendt.

This exhibition surveys the fascinating and multifaceted career of Erica Rutherford (b. Edinburgh, 1923 – d. Charlottetown, 2008), whose work explores themes of persona and gender, home and landscape, and whose life was shaped by the search for identity and community.

Erica Rutherford is the first Prince Edward Island artist to be featured at the prestigious La Biennale di Venezia. The 60th edition of the international art exhibition began in April 2024 and showcases five paintings by Rutherford.
