Preserving our town’s history for the generations of tomorrow. The Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum has a large collection of local artifacts.

The Museum has attractive exhibits for all ages and is wheelchair accessible. Erected in 1872, the building which now houses the Carleton Place and Beckwith Heritage Museum served the community of Carleton Place as Town Hall and lock up until 1879, and as Victoria Public school until 1969. The museum is run by the Carleton Place and Beckwith Historical Society. Since 1979 the Historical Society has made an effort to preserve and promote the heritage of the communities of Carleton Place and Beckwith Township. Our members are united by a desire to conserve and share local history.

This wooden hinged garbage lid was discovered in our artifact storage room.
We don't see anything like it in any of our photos of town ...... 🤔 so we're not sure it's a Carleton Place item.
Does anyone remember throwing trash into one of these on Bridge Street?

Curator Jennifer Irwin and summer student Abi Prince were featured in the Spring/Summer edition of MUSE, published by The Canadian Museums Association.

Since the program’s inception in 1996, Young Canada Works (YCW) has sought to foster the development of young Canadians by providing short-term work opportunities and internships that foster knowledge and skill development within the sector.

We’re excited to show off this beautiful Findlay blue-enamelled Dutch oven and trivet, recently donated to the museum! (Thanks Big Vintage!)

This is the first blue-enamelled Findlay piece we’ve acquired for our collection. When it comes to Findlay’s enamelled ovens, the most common colour you’ll come across is green. These ovens were produced in two different sizes, with this being the larger of the two.

Based on its style and construction, this oven was most likely made in the late 1960s.
It’s always exciting to add another piece of Carleton Place’s Findlay history to the museum’s collection!

We're grateful to Adin Daigle for sharing his amazing collection of local drugstore bottles, dispensing equipment, prescriptions and all sorts of other neat items with us yesterday!

His enthusiastic presentation on "Prescriptions of the Past" was a fun way to learn about the men and women who worked as pharmacists in Carleton Place.

IT’S WORLD PHARMACISTS DAY! 💊

One of Ontario’s pharmacy pioneers was a woman working in a tiny drugstore in Oil Springs, Lambton County in the 1860s. (Not local, but important!)

Elizabeth Adamson’s husband helped build an addition onto their home for Dr. Samuel MacKlem’s office and drugstore. Elizabeth began assisting the doctor and soon studied pharmacy under Dr. MacKlem, learning about the preparation and dispensing of medicines.

In 1866, Elizabeth purchased the drugstore’s stock of herbs, chemicals and medicines and began operating the business herself.

She later studied pharmacy at the University of Toronto, earning her pharmaceutical degree in 1871.

Elizabeth continued running her business for decades, eventually passing it on to her daughter Lucy.

So, on World Pharmacists Day, we’re looking back at a woman who was making her mark in pharmacy more than 150 years ago.
