Come see our new summer exhibit tomorrow, Saturday, May 30.
It's all about McArthur Island through the years. Bates and Innes produced knitwear in the stone mill there between 1907 and 1963.

Larry McGregor will be here from 11 to 1, demonstrating this Gearhart Circular Sock Knitting Machine, originally patented in the late 1800s. Drop in and have a look and a chat!

This aerial view of McArthur Island was taken on May 6, 1963.
There’s so many interesting things to see here if you zoom in, including the town dump, east of Princess Street (can anyone tell us what that building was?), a glimpse of the Beckwith Street arena, the hydroelectric plant on the north side of the river, and a working rail line making its way through town.

Taking your gal to the game? Or for a drive?
You need an “O.V.” brand Kozy Rug! They were made right here in town at Bates and Innes on McArthur Island.
Bates and Innes operated 1907 - 1963. These images are from their 1932 catalogue.

It's Victoria Day!
Our building was home to Victoria School from 1879 to 1969; thousands of children passed through the doors, learned their ABC's, got into mischief and played in the schoolyard.
Victoria School was named for its location in Victoria Ward, located on the north side of the Mississippi River.
Carleton Place was at one time divided into three wards: Dufferin (Mississippi River to Lake Avenue), Stanley (Lake Avenue to Highway 7) and Victoria (entire north side of the river).

Eldon "Joe" Henderson, wearing his uniform as Leader of The Orange Young Britons in 1962. This extraordinary man served the community with his involvement in the Orange Lodge, O.Y.B Band, Marching Saints, Chamber of Commerce, 150th Anniversary Committee, Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee, Hydro Electric Commission, Minor Baseball, Hospital Board, the Canoe Club and more.
Of course, he also served as Mayor from 1973 to 1976.

Did you know that Mayor Henderson chose the "257" telephone exchange for Carleton Place? He chose this number to honour the Orange Young Britons Lodge #257, of which he had become a member at the age of 14!
