Looking for tools, parts, hardware, shop equipment, aviation odds and ends, or maybe just a great excuse to explore behind the scenes at the Museum?
The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum has recently received a remarkable donation of tools, equipment, hardware, and workshop materials from the Balushak Estate, and we are opening portions of these surplus workshop items for a special public sale on June 7.
There is a little bit of everything waiting to be discovered - hand tools, table saws, snow blowers, tires, sanding belts, shop hardware, a floor-model abrasive blasting cabinet, metal cutting band saw, Rigid 300 pipe threader with fittings, and plenty of unexpected treasures.

In honour of Asian Heritage Month, we remember Albert Mah, an Asian Canadian whose courage and dedication made a lasting impact during the Second World War.

Born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Mah first served as an instructor with the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Edmonton. He later flew 420 missions into China from an air base in India with the China National Aviation Corporation, an extraordinary achievement that speaks to his skill and bravery.

Mah’s story is also one of compassion. He famously helped rescue a 15-year-old child, Dawn Greenhalgh from China. She would go on to become a well-known Canadian stage and screen actor and the mother of Anne of Green Gables’ star Megan Follows.

We recognize Albert Mah and the many contributions of Asian Canadians who have helped shape Canada’s history and continue to strengthen our communities.

Flight Days & the CATPM’s Stearman

This post is by one of our summer workers, Rory McCallum has submitted several blog posts over the last year, this is his latest. Rory is a Music student at Brandon University. The Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum acquired a Stearman Kaydet last season ( and we are thrilled to welcome it to our fleet of flying aircraft this summer. For the rest of the summer, the Stearman will be available for the CATPM’s remaining flight days, which, barring unforeseen circumstances, will occur on Armed Forces Day weekend (June 6-7) Canada Day, July 18th, and 19th, and more!...

Lighting the Way Home: The Humble Flare Pot

This post, her first of many (I hope) is by one of our summer workers. Whitney M. Hodgins is a Master of Arts Student at Athabasca University. This black round object caught my eye in the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, it was inside the workshop, sitting humbly on a display case. At first I was perplexed about what it could be. At first I thought it reminded me of the Bob-ombs from Super Mario Bros. But instead I found out it was much more than that. Sitting humbly on the shelf were flare pots....
