In 2002, Didier Claes opened his first gallery in the prestigious Sablon neighbourhood in Brussels, dedicated to presenting high-value objets d'art from some of the finest Western collections. Now in a new location, the gallery continues to attract a clientele of European and American collectors, as well as internationally renowned museums.

Un masque comparable, passé en vente en 1988, présente les mêmes traits : visage en cœur, coiffe tressée à mèche centrale, diadème gravé, barbe dentelée et scarifications marquées.

Ces similitudes indiquent une même main, ou un même atelier.
Le style évoque une influence yaouré non-baoulé, à l’ouest du pays baoulé.

L’équilibre des volumes et la qualité d’exécution confirment une œuvre de grand maître.

The Jonga carve figures of great formal economy, distinguished by a flattened facial plane marked by a long vertical scarification running from the bridge of the nose to the center of the forehead, a motif also found in the Ubangi region. The faces, covered with red and ochre pigments, evoke rites of passage or healing, symbolizing the transition from one state of being to another. Like their Komo neighbors, the Jonga incorporate into their art a cosmology rich in oppositions: white, associated with the moon, illness, unknown ancestors, or menstrual femininity, refers to what is low, unstable, or in decline; whereas red, the color of the sun, vitality, health, and known ancestors, embodies the fullness of life and the restoration of order. In healing rituals, these two hues, antithetical yet complementary, are united in a process of regeneration, in which disorder (white) prepares the return to order (red).

Avec la collaboration de la Ville de Bruxelles et de son Bourgmestre Philippe Close, soutenu par des partenaires publics et privés et le Centre Culturel Congolais, Didier Claes a le plaisir de vous annoncer la prochaine exposition dont il sera le commissaire : « AFRICA LEGACY ». Une centaine d’œuvres classiques et contemporaines issues de collections privées et institutionnelles seront exposées.

With the collaboration of the City of Brussels and its Mayor, Philippe Close, and with the support of public and private partners as well as the Congolese Cultural Center, Didier Claes is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition, which he will curate: “AFRICA LEGACY.” Approximately one hundred classical and contemporary artworks from private and institutional collections will be on display.

Met de medewerking van de Stad Brussel en haar burgemeester Philippe Close, en met de steun van publieke en private partners evenals het Congolees Cultureel Centrum, kondigt Didier Claes met genoegen de komende tentoonstelling aan, waarvan hij curator zal zijn: “AFRICA LEGACY”. Ongeveer honderd klassieke en hedendaagse kunstwerken uit privé- en institutionele collecties zullen te zien zijn.
