THE HANDS BEHIND ALCÔVE | The Boghossian Foundation takes you behind the scenes of Alcôve, a collection developed by SILA, an initiative dedicated to bringing contemporary design into dialogue with the exceptional craftsmanship of the Middle East.

In Beirut, designer and interior architect Pierre Gonalons and artistic director André Chami meet the artisans whose expertise and gestures bring each piece to life.

Working with copper and brass, these master craftspeople draw on centuries of metalworking tradition to give form to a contemporary collection inspired by architecture. Pierre Gonalons first encountered the defining motif of Alcôve during his residency in Beirut, before recognising its echoes in Oscar Niemeyer’s architecture in Tripoli.

A journey through Beirut at the intersection of design, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Alcôve is designed by Pierre Gonalons under the artistic direction of André Chami, with pieces crafted by Maison Tarazi.

◇ Discover the collection at SILA, in the Design Store of the Villa Empain.
◇ Open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 11 am to 6 pm

OBSIDIAN | Did you know? Obsidian, a naturally occurring black volcanic glass, has fascinated Jean-Michel Othoniel since the early 1990s. His experiments with this mysterious material marked the beginning of his exploration of glass and introduced him to the world of glassmakers.

In ‘Diary of Happiness’, the Armenian room echoes this long-standing fascination. Armenia holds a special place in this story, with its remarkable deposits of obsidian, a vitrified volcanic lava that has inspired the artist for more than thirty years.

Discover it at the Villa Empain ✨

◇ ‘Onsidiane’, 2018, watercolour
◇ ‘Invisibility Face’, 2015, Obsidian, chasnut carved wood base

GLASSWORK | In ‘Diary of Happiness’, Jean-Michel Othoniel presents colourful glass sculptures created in collaboration with the glassmakers of Firozabad, India. The artist first travelled there in 2010, discovering a centuries-old tradition of glassmaking and drawing inspiration along the way.

« Along the roads leading me to that isolated place, I noticed innumerable stacks of clay bricks, just piled there. Indians first buy a plot of land and then, brick by brick, they amass this treasure that will one day be transformed into their home. To me, these piles of bricks were a sign of hope, the dream that we all have, that one day we will build our own house. »_Jean-Michel Othoniel
