🖤 NEW ACQUISITION 🖤

Richard Avedon
Andy Warhol, Artist, New York City, August 20, 1969
9 ⅝ by 7 ⅝ in.
24.4 by 19.4 cm.

Shocking in its mapping of violence Richard Avedon took the iconic portrait showing Warhol stripped to the waist and revealing the severe surgical scars from the 1968 assassination attempt by Valerie Solanas. Avedon has cropped out superfluous identifying material and used the artist’s arms and black leather jacket as framing.  The body has a heroic, even mythic presence.

Warhol’s right hand behaves like a calming and restraining gesture as if it were holding back his intestines which might spill out.  The left hand peels back the waistband of the pants and underwear tentatively beckoning us to take a closer look.  The whole form is a becomes an unsettling portrait, but not overwhelming, striking a balance between being unseemly or grotesque and mesmerizing.

The portrait serves a metaphor for the horrific violence of the late sixties.  Indeed Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated two days after Warhol was shot (June 6, 1968).

We find this image profoundly moving, pertinent and masterful. A deeply haunting image that serves as a reminder that unlike the historic Momento Mori images rooted in Roman-Stocic traditions this image is distinctly modern as it reminds us of second chances. The ability to survive in the face of the most violent adversity. 🩶

The Charles Riva Collection continues to embrace the magnetic dialogue between art and design.

Design elevates the room, be it domestic or public, and perfectly compliments works of art from all periods, from antiquity to contemporary. We continue to present our collection in settings where there is a happy marriage between art and design. Together they add beauty and sophistication to every environment.

The space occupied by art and design in collecting deeply informs and shapes the Charles Riva Collection. 💫

If you are in London for Wimbledon stop by our London office in Mayfair to see this sublime exhibition.

Defining Form: A Landmark Presentation of Era-Defining, Seminal Works from the 1950’s and 60’s by the iconic British sculptor, Barbara Hepworth.

is delighted to present an exhibition of seminal works from the 1950’s and 60’s created by the iconic, Barbara Hepworth. This historic figure of the 20th century, challenged and conquered the male-dominated world of sculpture, developing a unique language of ‘pierced’ forms. The technique Hepworth pioneered was to greatly influence the trajectory of modern sculpture, and be adopted (though utilised to different artistic ends), by her close contemporary, Henry Moore.

The selected works in this landmark presentation comprise: ‘Reclining Figure II’ (1955-56), ‘Oval Form (Penwith Landscape) 1955-6, Three Small Forms’ (1964), ‘Elegy III’ (1966) and ‘Disc with Strings (Moon) (1969).

We hope to see you there.

The Charles Riva collection was delighted to have two important works in ‘Studio Iron’, the inaugural exhibition of Isamaya ffrench’s at Saatchi Yates.

On view for our collection were Paul McCarthy and Ugo Rondinone.

McCarty’s Brancusi Tree/Butt Plug distorts the familiar visual language of pop culture with a large-scale inflatable butt plug rendered in reflec-
tive fabric, at once absurd, confrontational and hollow.

Moonrise by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone is part of a series of a 12-part sculptural series of massive, figurative busts inspired by ancient ceremonial masks and Rondinone’s recurring interest in the calendar year. The collection is divided into distinct groups (such as Moonrise. East and Moonrise. West).

Paul McCarthy
Brancusi Tree, Butt Plug, 2007
Self inflatable mylar fabric
1 integrated fabric
190 × 95 cm (diameter)

Ugo Rondinone
Moonrise, West, 2004
Black polyurethane cast,
96 x 67 × 30 cm
