Announcing Tony Albert’s forthcoming exhibition ‘Reverb’ opening at Sullivan+Strumpf’s Gadigal/Sydney gallery this September.
 
Coinciding with Tony Albert’s critically acclaimed retrospective ‘Not a Souvenir’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, ‘Reverb’ is a new major body of work by the renowned artist presented downstairs at our Gadigal/Sydney gallery. A special project initiated by Albert will feature in our upstairs gallery, more details coming soon.
 
In ‘Reverb’, Tony Albert brings together two new bodies of work examining the persistence of language, imagery and representation around the ways cultural attitudes continue to echo across generations. At the centre of the exhibition is a new series of works carrying the recurring phrase ‘As the topic of aboriginal people entered the conversation’. Drawing upon the vernacular of everyday Australia, Albert subverts familiar expressions and cultural shorthand, turning colloquialisms back upon themselves.

Across two locations, Sullivan+Strumpf Naarm/Melbourne and an off-site location, ‘Shimmer’ by Gregory Hodge opens next Thursday 27 August.
 
Based in Paris for the past six years, Hodge has continued to refine a distinctive visual language that explores the relationship between the image surface and perception. Drawing from personal source material alongside motifs of landscapes, interiors, flowers and architecture, the artist constructs densely layered compositions that hover between recognisable imagery and abstraction.

Alongside a new body of paintings, Merrett presents an installation that extends her consideration of an artwork’s supports and materials beyond their physical function; drawing attention to the often unseen structures, relationships and forms of knowledge that underpin the making of an artwork.

In the studio with Tim Silver ahead of HEAP at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas
 
We are pleased to share a behind the scenes glimpse into Tim Silver’s process of life casting for his new work featuring in the Festival of Dangerous Ideas opening this week on the 22 August 26.
 
Tim Silver is included in HEAP, an ephemeral installation that is part of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas held at Carriageworks, Sydney. Audiences are invited to dig through 120 tonnes of soil in which artworks by eight artists are concealed. Simultaneously an art installation and archaeological site, the work asks audiences to step bare foot into the earth, becoming part of a dig that celebrates shared discovery of dangerous ideas.

Forthcoming to the Gadigal/Sydney Gallery, Lara Merrett’s exhibition ‘Stilling’ opens this Thursday 20 August.

Across this new series, Merrett expands the conventional frameworks of painting, incorporating detailed hand-stitched elements using naturally dyed threads.

Opening event: Join us in the gallery for opening drinks and celebrations with the artist this Thursday 20 August from 6 – 8 PM at Sullivan+Strumpf Gadigal/Sydney.

Sullivan+Strumpf congratulates Barayuwa Munuŋgurr as this year’s recipient of the NATSIAA’s Telstra Bark Painting Award.
 
“To truly understand the foundation of Barayuwa Munuŋgurr’s art practice is to grasp the significance of ancestral stories of the Munyuku clan, to see their symbology within the intricate crosshatching of each work. The authority, confidence and energy of Munuŋgurr’s practice and his bravery in continually embracing fresh approaches is a clue to the influence of that heritage.”
