Our 2025 exhibition program has now finished. We re-open on Saturday 31 January 2026 and our first exhibition for the year opens on Saturday 7 February 2026.
*
Our opening exhibition for 2026 is ‘Rewilding - Eight Contemporary American Artists’. ‘Rewilding’ features new and recent works by nine US artists that offer a nuanced reconsideration of the traditional landscape genre at a time when America is wrestling with its cultural and geopolitical identity.
*
Artists in ‘Rewilding’ are William Eric Brown (New York), George Bolster (New York ), Kyle Johnson (California), Kasper Kovitz (California), Keiko Narahashi (New York), David Opdyke (New York), Emilio Perez (New York), Kate Shepherd (New York and Texas) and Mary Temple (New York).
*
Kate Shepherd appears courtesy of Galerie Lelong, New York.
*
This exhibition has been organised by John Melick. As an Australian working in the art world in New York for 30+ years, Melick has a longstanding relationship with most of the artists, coupled with an enduring interest in non-traditional, unconventional approaches to 20th century and more contemporary landscape art.
*
‘Rewilding - Eight Contemporary American Artists’ continues until 21st March 2026.

The title of Maria Kontis’ exhibition, And I Would Say These Things to No One But You, is drawn from a letter sent by Joy Hester to Albert Tucker.

In creating new work for this exhibition Kontis reviewed over 500 of Tucker’s images and letters in his archive at State Library Victoria. These letters granted her access to the intimate and vulnerable side of Tucker and his peers. Redrawing some of the photographs and letters, she emphasised some elements and eliminated others, bringing new perspectives and insights into their interpretation.

See Albert Tucker anew, through the eyes of Maria Kontis. Visit Heide today.

・・・
When trawling through Albert Tucker’s photographic archive, Maria Kontis was particularly drawn to Tucker’s photos of acrobats, trapeze performers and rope artists at Melbourne’s Tivoli Theatre.

Kontis was struck by the camera’s ability to capture these performers mid-air and render their risk and exertion in stillness.

Of this, she says, “Maybe it reflects how I think about memory or the image itself: something fragile, shifting, unanchored … it’s not about nostalgia, but something more open-ended — where the figure is suspended but not stuck in time or reduced to it.”

See Kontis’ drawings in And I Would Say These Things to No One But You, on now at Heide.
